Summer Student – PHI Student

Temporary Full-Time (Approx. 4-month duration)

The PHI Student undertakes the following duties in support of the Health Unit’s Environmental Health Programs.

BEACH MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

• Carry out microbial sampling of designated beaches in Grey Bruce

• Coordinate transport of samples to lab for analysis

• Participate in analysis and communication of results, and decisions regarding the posting of beaches

• Work in natural bodies of water up to approx. 1 meter in depth, subject to wave action and uneven lake bed

VECTOR-BORNE DISEASE SURVEILLANCE PROGRAM

• Carry out surveillance activities including weekly mosquito trap maintenance and mosquito sample gathering

• Coordinate transport of samples to lab for analysis

• Safe Food and Water Programs

• Assist with other project and program support including surveillance, education, and communication strategies

HEALTHY ENVIRONMENTS

• Assist with other project and program support including surveillance, education, and communication strategies

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Education – Training

• Enrolled in a degree program accredited by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI) Board of Certification (BOC)

• Valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle for use on the job

• Competent swimmer and comfortable working in large bodies of water

• Excellent organizational and communication skills

• Ability to work independently

• Availability to work flexible hours and/or on weekends.

OTHER

• Successful candidate will be required to wear a Personal Floatation Device

• Successful candidate will be required to work alone at times

• This position does not fulfill the requirements of a practicum placement that is required for a Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada), CPHI(C), from the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors
