Salary: $34.43 – $39.28 per hour
Position summary:
Reporting to the Manager, Accounting Services, the Junior Accountant is responsible for performing a variety of accounting/financial related functions to support the Manager and the Corporate Services Accounting Department in accordance with agency policy.
Responsibilities:
- Supports routine daily tasks associated with the accounts payable and receivable functions.
- Supports the Manager, Accounting Services to:
- Prepare the annual external audit working paper file.
- Prepare monthly financial statements including general ledger account reconciliation and all journal entries related to such.
- Provide analytical support to all agency departments upon request and participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to the accounting functions.
- Interpret, recommend, and implement policies at a team level and ensure adherence to policies in accordance with existing legislation. Participate in the development of divisional and agency policies as appropriate.
- Provide learning experiences for Finance Clerks.
- Supports the Payroll & Benefits Administrator to:
- Administer payroll in accordance with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) guidelines and agency policy.
- Prepare payroll and benefits related remittances to appropriate agencies.
- Prepare regulatory filing requirements with respect to payroll and benefits reconcile payroll and benefit related balance sheet accounts monthly.
- Administer the benefit and pension plans in accordance with agency guidelines and agency policy.
- Maintain and secure payroll and benefits records and related files.
- Compile and produce payroll and benefits related reports, as required.
- Record all vacation, sick, medical and compensation time requests.
- Contributes to the development of program plans and develops, plans, implements, coordinates, and evaluates assigned projects in consultation with the manager and other team members as required.
- Participates in the orientation of staff, students, volunteers, and others as may be required for the position.
Provides input into the budget process upon request.
Requirements:
- Three-year College Accounting Diploma or enrolment in the third or fourth level of professional studies with CMA or CGA professional accounting associations as evidenced by enrolment confirmation and a member in good standings.
- Minimum four years’ experience in accounting/finance specifically in payroll, accounts payable /receivable and some higher-level experience in reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
- Demonstrated ability to function cooperatively as a team player in a multi-disciplinary field.
- Demonstrated computer skills including spreadsheets, word processing and accounting software and the ability to manipulate spreadsheets and database.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written), negotiation and problem-solving skills.
- Satisfactory criminal reference check.
- Current Ontario driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Proficiency in both official languages is an asset.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
