Job Synopsis

MCC Saskatchewan Thrift Shops strive to be a welcoming and caring place within a community. Generating revenue while practicing and promoting faithful stewardship and care for God’s creation is the mission statement of the MCC Thrift Shops.
The Volunteer Coordinator is an employee of MCC Saskatchewan and reports to the Community Gift & Thrift Manager. Under the direction of the Manager, the Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for maintaining and modeling a high level of organization and production through recruiting, training and mentoring volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator will also support the receiving, processing and selling requirements of the shop.
The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for developing volunteer recruiting plans and strategies, orientation of new volunteers, developing and providing job specific training for volunteers, and managing all volunteer records and information in the Volgistics database. This role maintains the primary contact with all volunteers, while also connecting with patrons at the shop, both customers and donors, providing meaningful community connection. As required, the Volunteer Coordinator may be called upon to assist with workroom and retail operations.

Required
Development and leadership:
  • Experience in leading and training volunteers
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse experiences and life situations.

Field Expertise:
  • Experience with volunteers
  • Knowledge of the basic operations of a Thrift shop (receiving, processing, sorting, pricing, selling)
  • Must be extremely organized and a self-starter.
  • Strong at Multi-tasking with the ability to prioritize a wide variety of tasks.

Communication expertise:
  • Good oral and written communication skills required, using today’s technologies.
  • Ability to diplomatically communicate policies and boundaries.

Work and Organizational Skills:
  • Ability to make quick and thoughtful decisions.
  • Willingness to grow and learn new skills.
  • Heart for justice, active peacemaking and global understanding
  • Respect for and discretion in dealing with confidential material required.
  • Intermediate working knowledge of MS Office programs including Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting, prioritizing a wide variety of tasks required.
  • Willing to work within and promote MCC Thrift Operating Principles
  • Required to work non-standard hours, including evenings and Saturdays.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • May require 6 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday.
  • Valid Canadian Driver's license
  • Satisfactory Canadian criminal record check (upon hire)

Preferred
  • Awareness of second-hand market
  • Volunteer management certification
  • Knowledge of antiques, collectibles, and brand recognition
  • Experience with volunteer management software e.g., Volgisitics
Key Responsibilties
General
  • Communicate the MCC mission and values and mission of the Thrift Shop in a positive manner to staff, volunteers, donors, and the community at large.
  • Participate in staff meetings, retreats, and lead devotions as required.
  • Attend MCCS functions as required and represent MCCS values and missions to donors, customers, and the public.
  • Act with integrity, reflecting Christian respect for those we serve, including volunteers, customers, and donors.
  • Model reconciliation and healing in our daily actions with public, volunteers, core members and staff.
  • Serve as a brand advocate and ambassador for MCC mission and values in every interaction with customers and donors.
  • Share the news about your shop and the network in the community.
  • Support the staff team as needed to meet the demands of daily operations.
  • Assist with special events and projects as needed.
  • Adhere to Health & Safety Guidelines as established by law and the organization.
  • Ensure the support and direction necessary for the effective implementation of the health and safety programs are provided and, health and safety policies, procedures and regulations are enforced.
  • Be proactive in maintaining clean workspaces that meet health & safety standards.

Volunteer Management
  • Develop strategies to meet targets in your areas of volunteer management.
  • Communicate between volunteers and staff to keep team interconnected and consistent.
  • Develop volunteer recruitment strategy.
  • Manage volunteer recruitment process, including recruitment, training, interviewing, screening and orientation.
  • Reach out to schools, churches and organizations to promote volunteerism in the thrift shop.
  • Facilitate and host group volunteer requests.
  • Maintain up to date and accurate volunteer records.
  • Perform annual check-ins with volunteers and/or assist Manager with annual check-ins.
  • Develop and implement formal and informal volunteer recognition and appreciation initiatives.

Other
  • Assist with maintaining and coordinating the staff & volunteer room.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized.
  • Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and public communicating MCC's values.
  • Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public
Challenges:
This position is diverse in its duties; requiring a self-starter who is able to make decisions while being flexible and adaptable. Must have a willingness to serve, be able to motivate a team of volunteers and keep multiple, simultaneous projects on track.

Location Description

The Lanigan Community Gift & Thrift Shop is located at 14 Main Street in Lanigan, Saskatchewan. The current town population is 1400, but services the surrounding area as well. The community has all basic services including medical clinic, hospital, schools, recreation center and curling rink.
The Lanigan Community Gift & Thrift Shop employs 3 permanent employees and has approximately 60 volunteers. The Shop is one of the 6 Thrift Shops owned by MCC Saskatchewan.
Saskatchewan has approximately 1 million people, 35% living in rural areas. The majority are 2nd-to-5th generation Canadians of European descent; 15% are of First Nations origin, 5% Metis. About 700 people arrive in the province each year as refugees.
The MCC constituency includes 96 churches, most belonging to Mennonite Church Saskatchewan and the SK Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. Rosthern Junior College, a Mennonite high school is also a part of the constituency.
