Role Overview:
The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre was established in 1972 by the Western Canadian Universities Marine Sciences Society (WCUMSS), a registered charity, in order to provide a permanent base for marine and coastal-oriented field operations on the west coast of Canada. We are currently in search of a proficient Contract Accountant to join our team to aid in year-end preparation and catch-up tasks. The Contract Accountant will be instrumental in ensuring the precision and timeliness of our financial reporting. The ideal candidate will possess robust technical accounting expertise, preferably with experience in the public sector or registered charity domain. This role demands a high degree of accuracy and the capacity to work independently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with all aspects of year-end preparation and reconciliations, including supporting schedules
- Create and post journal entries to ensure accurate financial records
- Ensure adherence to accounting standards and regulatory requirements
- Collaborate with the finance team to address backlogged accounting tasks
- Assist with development of accounting policies and procedures
- Prepare and assist with the analysis of financial reports for internal and external stakeholders
Qualifications:
- Professional accounting designation (CPA) is desired but not required
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting, with a solid technical foundation
- Prior experience in the public sector or registered charity environment is highly preferred
- Proficiency in accounting software and excellent Excel skills are required
- Public practice experience and knowledge of audit principles and practices preferred
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively independently
- Must have a suitable home or office working environment for remote work
- Ability to work with minimal supervision while reporting regularly on progress
Compensation: hourly rate commensurate with experience, skills, and education.
Duration: 3 to 6 months
