Job Summary
The cook working at Little Cubs Learning Centre will prepare, cook, and serve breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack for the centre's children, while observing any allergies or food restrictions. The cook must demonstrate skills in preparing food in a nutriRous, good tasRng and appealing manner and will create a list of weekly grocery shopping list. The cook will be required to cover breaks for classroom teachers and work in the classrooms as and when needed. When in program with children, the cook will also be entitled to $2 Wage Enhancement.
Organizational information
In addition to the base salary, the Cook is entitled to the $2 wage enhancement provided by the County when working in the classroom. Additionally, all full-time staff they will be entitled to extended health benefits for their family, dental benefits, and paid time off after the probation period is completed (3 months).
Responsibilities
COMMUNICATION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Document any menu changes for the educators so they in turn can post changes for parents/caregivers.
- Maintain necessary records such as items purchased, refrigerator and freezer temperatures, food temperatures etc.
- Maintain good communication with parents/caregivers, children, and staff.
- Maintain good communication with parents/caregivers of children who have special food requirements.
INITIATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Notify the supervisor of problems with any appliances. Comply with the child care program policy & procedures.
COACHING AND DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attend workshops relevant to position.
HEALTH AND SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Follow Canada’s Good Guide and all Public Health recommendations and requirements.
- Awareness of food allergies and special diets and prepare separate meals if necessary.
- Conform to all food/sanitation regulations such as keeping the appliances, floor, sinks, and cupboards cleaned to maintain a clean kitchen.
- Proper clothing, shoes, and hair restraints according to Public Health Standards and Childcare are to be worn daily.
- Other housekeeping duties like cleaning of the Centre -assigned by the Supervisor.
TEAMWORK RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attend meeting with staff and parents/caregivers as required.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Order, store, prepare and serve food to retain maximum nutritive value and to prevent contamination.
- Plan daily menus that follow Canada’s Food Guide and Ministry of Education Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA).
- Work in the classroom to cover breaks or to maintain ratios set by the Ministry (when in classroom, will be entitled to the Wage Enhancement).
- Maintaining records/receipts pertaining to the kitchen.
Education and Qualifications
- Valid Food Handler Certificate.
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certified.
- Strong interpersonal, communication skills, and leadership skills.
- Experience working in a daycare centre is an asset.
- Up to date Record of Immunization (As per requirements of the local Ministry of Health).
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR certification.
- Current Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Ability to adapt to changes.
- Energetic, positive, dependable, flexible, and hard working.
Knowledge/Skills and other Requirements
- Experience cooking in a child care setting or facility with many people.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to follow direction and work independently.
- Familiar with the nutritional requirements of the Child Care Early Years Act (CCEYA).
- Basic computer skills.

Job Type: Full-time
Salary: $17.00-$20.00 per hour
