Department Overview

The Strategic Initiatives Team, located within the Dean's Office, oversees the school's data analysis and reporting strategy, supporting the school's strategic objectives through cross-organizational reporting, quality assurance (such as accreditation and rankings), and business intelligence to inform senior decision-makers and operational teams. Additionally, the team supports the ongoing development, tracking, and reporting of the school’s strategic plan. It supports the business intelligence functions across the organization, managing the intake, scoping of cross-organizational analytic projects, and facilitating the production of results through collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Position Overview

Your role is central to cultivating a data-informed culture within the organization, providing crucial support to senior decision-makers and teams by supplying insights necessary for informed decision-making. You bring to the table strong analytical skills that allow for the effective scoping of projects, tailored to meet both organizational and strategic needs. This involves identifying the most relevant data, employing best practices in data processing, and the adept development and communication of key insights to a broad range of internal stakeholders. Your expertise is not just in data analysis but also in the production of analytic products that simplify complex datasets into understandable and actionable intelligence for the organization.

The ability to collaborate across various departments is critical to your role, enabling the creation of significant, organization-level analysis and reporting. This cross-departmental collaboration ensures the generation of analytic products that are not only insightful but also instrumental in informing operational decision making across many teams and guiding the organization's strategic decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Data Analysis

  • Apply quantitative analysis, data mining, and data visualization expertise to identify and communicate data insights.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams for required analysis and support organization-wide business intelligence functions.
  • Ensure data is structured, cleaned, and prepared according to best practices for strategic and operational analysis.
  • Conduct primary research on priority analysis projects.

Data Collection and Management

  • Support the design and collection of significant organizational surveys (e.g. student programming, pulse surveys, orientation evaluation, organizational culture)
  • Review, monitor, and enhance data collection methods, including surveys and software, to capture comprehensive datasets.
  • Maintain knowledge of internal data structures, systems, governance requirements, and responsible data use.
  • Support ranking processes and manage QA, tracking trends and results, and contributing to a centralized data source.
  • Identify and maintain awareness of relevant external benchmarking data (government reporting, accrediting and rankings bodies, public datasets on education and business, etc) for use in critical analysis.
  • Ensure past and present data are accessible, reliably stored, and centralized in relevant formats and systems for easy retrieval.

Reporting

  • Transform raw data into digestible formats, revealing actionable insights for strategic decisions.
  • Produce a variety of reporting products to meet the needs of various leaders and teams, including data visualizations, written analytic reports, and presentations.
  • Develop centralized tools like Salesforce dashboards and data visualizations to monitor important organizational measures.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders for report amendments and effective data presentation.
  • Contribute to and maintain processes, practices, and templates for sharing business intelligence with decision makers.

Program Management and Measurement

  • Define and maintain KPIs and measures for organizational priorities, ensuring alignment with available data.
  • Collect and report data for school-level programs and student needs, supporting accreditation reporting.
  • Engage in primary research and analysis for high-priority projects, enhancing program management and measurement.

Collaboration and Support

  • Develop resources to support staff/faculty on analysis and technology use for business intelligence.
  • Collaborate on process documents and guidelines for cross-program system initiatives.
  • Foster a creative and collaborative environment, encouraging brainstorming and new ideas.
  • Build meaningful cross-functional relationships to promote and socialize data insights within the organization.


Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business analytics, data analysis or related discipline preferred. Master’s degree is an asset.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience demonstrating expertise in data collection, analysis, visualization, presentation, data-insights and story-telling

Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated advanced use of analytics platforms and data visualization experience
  • Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills with ability to prioritize work to meet timelines and achieve objectives
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to data integrity
  • Proven experience in synthesizing and analyzing data from qualitative and quantitative data sets, designing and generating impactful reports.
  • Proven track record of defining new data collection and analysis processes to increase efficiencies or effectiveness of reporting.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, with an ability to identify patterns, trend, and abnormalities in data sets.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to use active listening skills to understand needs, comfort with asking questions to seek clarity, guide and manage expectations, and produce products that are clear, persuasive and audience appropriate
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders
  • Familiarity with the University and business school environment, programs offered, market challenges, and employment industries is an asset
  • Self-directed individual, with a high tolerance for ambiguity and comfort with using professional judgment to make recommendations on the data provided
  • Accustomed to working with confidential data and adherence to all privacy requirements
  • Advanced computer skills in MS Office Suite, including PowerBI and advanced excel
  • Working knowledge of scripting languages (ex: SQL, Python, etc.) and data structures
  • Exposure to cloud technologies is a plus but not mandatory
  • Comfort with learning new software tools in an efficient manner
