Digitization Technician – Internship Oshawa , ON

Description

Under the direction of the Manager, McLaughlin Branch or delegate, the intern will assist with collecting, organizing, preserving and providing online access to a collection of resources that document the history of Oshawa.

Reports to: Manager, McLaughlin Branch

Hours: 560 hours total. Up to 35 hours per week(including Saturday and evenings)

Internship: In partnership with Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations, this is a short-term internship as a Digitization Technician at the Oshawa Public Libraries.

Hourly Rate: $17.00 per hour

Start Date: TBD

General Description of Duties:

  • Digitize photographs, books, scrapbooks, and documents.
  • Sort, arrange and describe materials to be digitized.
  • Scan designated photographs and textual materials.
  • Describe and create full text content for scanned textual material, including optical character recognition and transcription.
  • Upload textual material and photographs online and create related meta data.
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the bibliographical database through quality of record creation.
  • Assist with collection maintenance.
  • This position is required to take every reasonable precaution in the circumstances for the protection of the health and safety of the worker.

Skills and Abilities required:

  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Advanced computer competency.
  • Demonstrated research skills.
  • Proficient in the use of cataloguing and acquisitions software and office software currently in use in the work area.
  • Attention to detail; high degree of accuracy; numeracy, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong proficiency in technology (scanning, microfilm readers and electronic database usage).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • A Criminal Record Check satisfactory to the Employer is required.

Physical skills and working conditions:

This position requires extensive keyboarding, handling of books and materials, and pushing and pulling book trucks.

Required Qualifications & Education:

An eligible student currently enrolled in a Masters of Library Studies or Library Technician Diploma, Bachelor of Arts History, or equivalent education with the intent to return to school full-time in the following semester. Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada. Strong interest in history, archives, cataloguing, and public service in a public library setting. Current experience working in a library or museum will be considered an asset.
