Early Childhood Assistant Job Description
- An Early Childhood Assistant (ECA) works as a team with the Early Childhood Educator (RECE) in the classroom to support children Early Learning and Development. At Big Hearts Day Care Centre, ECAs may work in any age group from Infants (newborn) to School Age (12 years).
- Lead young children's activities, tell stories, teach songs and prepare craft materials.
- Be familiar with the ELECT document and How Does Learning Happen document (MEDU)
- Prepare and serve snacks and meals.
- Help children eat, dress, change diapers, and toilet train.
- Implement daily programs for children that are developmentally appropriate and focus on all learning areas.
- Document observations of experiences, learning, and development using a variety of methods (photos, notes, written paragraphs, learning stories)
- Work as a team to ensure a smooth-running classroom
- Ensure health, safety, supervision and wellness of children in care at all times.
- Maintain classroom ratios.
- Communicate effectively with children, parents and co-workers.
- Provide a warm, welcoming and nurturing environment.
- Discuss children's progress and challenges with team and at staff meetings.
- Maintain classroom records, log books, children’s daily sheets, and cleaning schedules.
- Develop positive relationships with children, ensure constant supervision at all times.
- Maintain, clean and sanitize daycare toys and equipment.
- Caring for children with special needs (physical and/or intellectual disabilities).
- Collaborate with outside community partners to support children in classroom with special needs.
- Complete daily cleaning and laundry tasks set-out on classroom cleaning duties chart
- Conduct playground inspections and complete checklist
- Plan and supervise children during outdoor play for a minimum of two hours per day.
- Assist children at nap time to help them to sleep or engage in solitary quiet activities.
Essential Skills: As an ECE assistant, you need to:
- Speak, read and write English.
- Be organized and assist with planning and implementing curriculum.
- Know about child development, health, safety and nutrition.
- Play and talk with children, and comfort them when necessary.
- Respond to children’s cues and needs
- Engage with children in a positive manner
- Communicate effectively verbally and through written documentation
