Reporting to the Environmental Technician & Compliance Operations Manager, the Environmental Technician is responsible for evaluating the suitability of waste to be accepted at the landfill using waste acceptance procedures. The incumbent will conduct environmental monitoring including air, surface and groundwater sampling, inspections, and audits of incoming wastes. They will also ensure compliance with environmental aspects of license requirements, assist in the maintenance of the environmental database and overall Environmental Management.

Key Responsibilities:
Evaluate and conduct audits of incoming waste at the Landfill using waste acceptance procedures
Conduct environment monitoring of surface, groundwater, leachate and air quality to ensure compliance with site Certificate of Approval
Measure water levels and gas concentrations
Review and inspect the resistivity of the landfill cell liner
Investigate, document complaints and recommend corrective actions regarding landfill operations
Ensure compliance with environmental aspects of license requirements
Assist in the maintenance of the environmental database and Environmental Management by entering data into the computer system and by preparing monthly summaries
Provide general equipment site maintenance
Provide technical and written input to the preparation of the annual report
Review waste approval documents and authorize material movement requisitions.
Take an active role in the health and safety of the facility, including monthly health and safety meetings
Conduct administration tasks as required
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:
Completion of post-secondary education in a Chemical or Environmental Technician program
3-5 years of work-related experience is required with prior experience in monitoring and sampling of ground water, surface water, gas monitoring, compliance and waste approval programs, leachate and ground water pumping systems
Must be familiar with Regulation 347/558, T.D.G.A. and basic chemistry
Previous experience in environmental and health and safety inspections and committee meetings is a definite asset
Class G driver’s license is required
Must have a strong attention to detail and be able to professionally communicate verbally and in writing to all levels of employees, customers and vendors
Must be able to multi-task and balance competing priorities
Must be proficient using Microsoft Office and other database management programs
Working Conditions:
80% of the time will be spent outdoors in all types of atmospheric conditions
Physical Demands include walking, hiking, climbing, bending, lifting and upper body strength during well purging
Position requires the operation of company trucks/ATV’s within the Landfill and for offsite purposes
