Position Overview

The Town of Bancroft is hiring an Event Planning Assistant, Summer Student position to develop knowledge of local and regional attractions, events, businesses, services and products with a strong emphasis on the Bancroft Gemboree event. The Gemboree is the largest gem and mineral show in Canada, held annually in Bancroft ON.

This is a Temporary position at 30-35 hours per week, with an anticipated start date of May
6th, 2024 (flexible) and ending September 1st, 2024 (flexible). The rate of pay for this position is $17.50/hour. The preferred candidates will be enthusiastic and have an interest in promoting tourism and demonstrate core competencies including (but not limited to): Client Service, Teamwork, Communication, Leadership and Digital Skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop knowledge of local and regional attractions, events, businesses, services and products;
  • Welcome visitors in a warm, friendly, professional manner (business casual attire required);
  • Answer visitor inquiries in a positive, informed, and friendly manner, both in person, on the phone, and through other mediums, as necessary;
  • Ability to assist with social media, marketing and email communications;
  • Assist the planning coordinator through administrative support functions;
  • Ability to lift, push and pull objects of up to 50lbs as needed for event preparation;
  • Ability to follow cash-handling best practices;
  • Ideal candidates have an interest in Event Planning, geology, science, minerals, management or tourism
  • Ideal candidates have the ability to work independently and have a good working knowledge of event management and/or coordination
  • Experience working with large scale events an asset

Qualifications, Skills & Job Knowledge:

  • Well-developed enthusiasm and interest in promoting tourism;
  • Excellent communication skills and personal image;
  • Ability to assist people in a friendly, cheerful manner;
  • Interest in developing personal knowledge of local area;
  • Being a team player;
  • Being able to work independently and demonstrate initiative;
  • Second language is an asset;
  • Computer skills;
  • Criminal Record Check required;
  • Students who are attending a post-secondary institution in September 2024 preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Working in the Municipal Office, or within Municipal Buildings;
  • Limited weekend event work is required;
  • Some lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50lbs;
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
