Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Provides resident-focused Food Service in the Long Term Care Home, including: preparation of resident meals and snacks; distribution and service of resident meals; receiving, storing and managing the inventory of resident food and Food Service supplies; daily cleaning and sanitizing of dishes, utensils and equipment used for resident meal preparation, delivery and service; operation of equipment; as well as other related duties as required for compliance and the efficient operation of the home. Works according to all applicable standards, acts and governing bodies.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, plus
  • Successful completion of one of the following as per legislation/Act:
    • Food Service Worker certificate program
    • Assistant Cook, Cook, or Institutional Cook certification program
    • Food & Nutrition Management diploma or degree
    • Active membership of the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management
    • Registered Dietitian; or,
    • an equivalent combination of education and/or experience as permitted by the applicable legislation/Act
  • A current Safe Food Handling Certificate as required by legislation/Act


KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

  • Up to 1 month of current related experience, preferably in a long term care geriatric setting
  • Knowledge of kitchen operating procedures, food storage and safekeeping
  • Knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, legislation, regulations, guidelines and best practices applicable to the long-term care sector
  • Knowledge of resident/client safety issues and demonstrated capacity to apply resident/client safety practices


SKILLS

  • Ability to work co-operatively with staff and residents
  • Ability to read menus
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and communicate in English
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • High standards of cleanliness and organization
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Time management skills in order to meet demanding schedules
  • Competent working withdigital/electronic technology; including electronic tablets, computers/laptops, Food Service-related software (i.e.Tray Card), and Microsoft Office products i.e. Outlook, Excel, web browsers, etc.
  • Must be able to exercise judgement and initiative
  • Ability and willingness to learn

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • In accordance with the Corporate Policy and applicable Legislation/Regulation(s), the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Police Record Check and submit a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, as well as complete any subsequent declaration or check as required by legislation/Act, regulation, and/or policy
  • Compliance with any requirements, including immunization and screening measures, of the infection prevention and control program as required by applicable legislation/Act, regulation or policy; some measures are only recommendations (not requirements)
    • Staff are required to be screened for Tuberculosis in accordance with the applicable legislation/Act
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the job
  • Must have a good attendance record
  • Must be able to work shift work, including days, afternoons, evenings and weekends


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for all general kitchen work - food preparation, serving, transporting food and dish carts, table and tray set-up and stripping, dishwashing, operation of dish machine, etc. for both regular Food Service as well as special events. Perform related duties as required.
  • May be required to bake, prepare desserts, or special diets.
  • Assembles nourishment and supply requirements.
  • Completes cleaning schedule, (e.g. floors, counters, walls, surfaces, ovens, equipment, etc), and other cleaning daily (or as required).
  • Operates commercial Food Services equipment as required to perform the duties as a Food Service Worker.
  • Required to record fridge, freezer and food temperatures before serving and/or as required.
  • Required to rotate food within the refrigerator and wherever applicable on a regular basis.
  • May be required to call in food and produce orders.
  • Responsible for reporting resident intake and dietary information to the appropriate staff for the purposes of documenting in resident charts/files and providing meals in line with resident dietary care plans.
  • Required to use digital/electronic technology to access resident dietary information such as meal distribution reports, assistive devices, diet restrictions and allergies, etc.
  • In emergency situations, assists with the activation of emergency plans and carries out duties assigned associated with the response plans.
  • Follow established safe working practices/protocols (e.g. WHMIS, infection control protocols, PPE etc.) and participate in training as required.
  • Assist, comply with and participate in Quality Assurance programs/initiatives as required, including accreditation programs, required training, and regulatory inspections.
  • Participates in mandatory training as required by the Ministry of Long Term Care, Seniors Services and the Niagara Region.
  • Carry out duties with appropriate attention for resident safety and in a manner consistent with applicable policies and procedures.

Shift Information


Required to work all shifts. Must be willing and able to work up to 24 hours per week and declare availability of 32 hours per week.
