Position Summary: The Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Coordinator is responsible for the continued development, implementation, and execution of a complete Health, Safety, Environmental Program for the specific location(s). The HSE will provide ongoing & proactive leadership in all health, safety environmental related activities for employees, supervisors and managers. Additionally, this position will hold responsibilities in overseeing claims management (WSIB), wellness programs, and ergonomics, while maintaining and enhancing a positive employee relations environment.

Position Responsibilities
  • Implementation of accident/incident reduction activities, including but not limited to the following: ergonomics, behavioral-based safety, standardized work, safety training and awareness, and safety auditing.
  • Oversee and maintain the company's health & wellness programs, while ensuring compliance with all federal, provincial and local Health, Safety, and Environmental regulations. and provide corrective actions if necessary.
  • Provide clarity, direction, and corrective action and creates/implements policies/procedures in relation to any health, safety and/or environmental related matter, which must be carried out in accordance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Take ownership in remaining up to date with the Company's Health and Wellness programs and comply with all Health and Safety guidelines. (OHSAS)
  • Oversee, handle, and investigate all work-related incidents, including claims management (WSIB), with the goal of zero lost-time claims. Included but not limited to this is managing all WSIB claims, early safe return to work plans (ESRTW), understanding the impact of a claim and making a positive impact from a financial perspective and maintaining ongoing/open communication with the WSIB and impacted employees.
  • Ensure emergency and contingency response procedures are in compliance and adhered to, including training, and waste manifest reporting.
  • Responsible for the Joint Health and Safety Committee and its overall execution. Will represent the Company as Co-Chairperson of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Coordinate regular workplace safety inspections and identify potential hazards. Track all open hazards and issues to ensure timely completion.
  • Ensures forklift training, maintenance, services, inspections, investigations, and anything else applicable is being managed effectively.
  • Facility management, including but not limited to fire safety, facility security, and building maintenance (plumbing, roofing, landscaping, etc.).
  • Maintain the facility's chemical management system that includes tracking of all chemicals used at the facility and the related MSDS.
  • Provide all departments with technical assistance on chemicals, waste, and environmental regulations.
  • Act as the Energy Champion to ensure the facility(s) is meeting corporate energy reduction goals by seeking out and managing energy reduction projects.
  • Responsible for environmental concerns, including air emissions, recycling, noise, chemicals, storm, and sanitary water discharges.
  • Oversee the contract management protocol to ensure all contractors are effectively made aware of all relevant company policies/procedures.
  • Provide regular contact to modified workers to ensure ESRTW plans are developed and adhered to. Utilize return-to-work specialists if necessary and ensure the financial impact is minimized.
  • Review and document all accident/incident investigation reports and develop corrective actions to decrease the number of workplace injuries.
  • Prepare and submit government reports as required by applicable regulations (local, provincial, federal)
  • Perform any and all other applicable duties that may be assigned.
Required Skills and Experience
  • University degree, or college diploma in Occupational Health and Safety discipline or equivalent in experience. Should an applicant be hired without this, it is understood that they must receive the appropriate education within three (3) years of their start date.
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years' experience as a Safety Specialist within an industrial environment is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of SPC and Control Charts
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Industrial Regulations, Fire Code, and all other pertinent health and safety related legislation.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of environmental legislation and EMS requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
  • Interpersonal, communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
