Job description

Powell Foundations Inc. (PFI) strives to provide clients with all their foundation needs. We specialize in constructing temporary excavation protection, pile driving, deep caisson shafts, sheet pile cofferdams, noise barriers, and overhead sign footings.

Our Health and Safety Manager's role requires solid field H&S experience in the construction sector and good business common sense. This person will have strong interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills to promote safety while holding others accountable for working safely and ensuring our compliance with best practices.

Job Duties

  • Drive all aspects of Health and Safety with a hands-on approach within the field and office admin.
  • Coach and conduct site inspections, safety incidents, and infractions.
  • Develop and circulate weekly toolbox talks.
  • Proactively help identify/analyze, develop, and document hazard identification and practices.
  • Conduct and record regular and random site audits and ensure hazard assessments are done.
  • Manage and update SiteDocs, participate, and develop job site handover files.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses. Document, provide recommendations, and follow up on corrective actions.
  • Oversee and effectively manage all aspects of WSIB claims management and modified duty/RTW programs.
  • Work with managers and employees to implement and improve effective Health and Safety processes.
  • Actively promote a safety culture/mindset through continuous communications, process improvement, relationship building, and organizational leadership.
  • Lead the Joint Health and Safety committees and field employee meetings.
  • Facilitate onboarding, annual, and as-required employee training programs.
  • Manage and run the PPE and Safety boot program.
  • Maintain, learn, and uphold Health and Safety regulations, policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Help continue the process to secure and maintain COR certification for Powell Foundations.
  • Liaise with external agencies such as MOL, WSIB, and Safety organizations.
  • Participate in learning opportunities with relevant industry events, regulatory consultations, etc.

Required Skills

  • 4-6 years of Health and Safety experience in construction is required; civil is an asset.
  • Degree/diploma in OH&S, Health Safety & Environmental Management, Safety Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of OH&S legislation, Workers Compensation, and construction industry standards
  • Prior Field construction experience as a labourer/operator/foreman will make you stand out.
  • Progressive responsibility for hands-on experience gained with inspections, investigations, audits, and training.
  • Demonstrate business common sense and good judgment.
  • Available and able to perform occasional night and weekend inspections as reasonably required.
  • Computer proficiency, emphasizing MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Certified JHSC Member.
  • Valid Class G driver’s license and satisfactory abstract are a must.
  • Previous participation in the COR certification process is an asset.
  • Professional safety designation (or working towards) is an asset
