Program Instructors provide a vital role in our organization, primarily focusing on the following: achieving excellence in program delivery; working in collaboration with colleagues in the advanced preparation of new and existing programming and materials; and promoting the mission, membership, and initiatives of Elephant Thoughts.
Position Summary:
Elephant Thoughts is seeking a highly-motivated and qualified candidate to teach courses for the Hospitality program, part of our Culinary Art program. This is a full-time role. Our ideal instructor will have 4-5 years of experience in hospitality, and has flexibility to work nights, days, weekends, holidays and special events. This position reports directly to the Chefs de Cuisine. The Hospitality program has an 8-to-9 week curriculum of 180 hours of classroom education in small, attentive groups and puts theory into practice. Pathsaala’s unique educational approach consists of: lectures, hands-on instruction, practical work and project-based learning. From marketing and hotel management, to budgeting for food costs, to event planning, students get an inside look at the functions and structure of the hospitality enterprise.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Deliver instruction through workshops and lessons to the highest teaching standards
- Register and support student progress in online training, where applicable
- Maintain up to date attendance tracking of all participants
- Photograph participants during program delivery. These photos will be used in final reports to funders, as well as to promote our work on social media. Be sure you have distributed and collected Photo Consent Forms in advance
- Distribute and collect Program Feedback Forms from participants for reporting purposes.
- Develop curriculum and lesson plans when requested, based on area of expertise and share with other program instructors and supervisor as needed and as requested
- Maintain all teaching materials, so that they are in good working order, and prepared for use on a daily basis.
- Celebrate and share the success of your program delivery with your supervisor.
- Participate in organizational training at Elephant Thoughts’ head office as requested by your supervisor.
- Pull materials and set up spaces for programming
- Clean space post-programming so that it is ready for next user group
IDEAL SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- 4-5 years experience in hospitality, ideally in a leadership role, pertaining to reception, front desk, banquets, restaurant service and Hospitality Management
- Bachelor’s degree in Hotel Management, Social Sciences, Business or other related fields required
- Strong teaching skills, proven ability to engage and motivate others
- Experience teaching and training youth in a variety of settings and from a variety of backgrounds
- Excellent oral and written English, communication skills in other languages is considered an asset
- Intermediate computer skills, advanced internet research skills
- Training in customer communication, organizational development and/or hotel management is an asset. Industry certification preferred
- Cultural sensitivity and ability to work with populations with diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability to interact in a collaborative manner with other departments and teams
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
- Valid police record check with vulnerable sector screening (note: each offence is reviewed individually and a decision is made as to the suitability of the candidate.)
