This position is responsible for providing nursing care in the facility as permitted through the College of Licenced Practice Nurses Alberta (CLPNA) full Scope of Practice and/or as delegated by the Resident Care Manager or Clinical Practice Lead. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) will be responsible to ensure that the clients are continuously provided a safe, secure, and healthy environment. The LPN will be responsible for supervising the frontline staff and ensuring that direct support is provided to staff so that they have the necessary tools and knowledge to provide quality support, and delegates tasks as required. The LPN will liaise with the necessary professionals, guardians, and/or trustees, in order to ensure that the individuals receive quality care. The LPN works under the governance of the Health Professions Act and ensures that service delivery is carried out in accordance with Excel Society’s Philosophy and Policies, as well as standards set by Continuing Care Health Services, Accreditation Canada, and Accommodations requirements.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Make timely and informed decisions that consider facts, goals, constraints, risk, Excel Society Values, and the Excel Advantage.
2. Providing safe, competent, and ethical client care to their full scope of practice and within the requirements of their regulatory college Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
3. Ensuring that nursing knowledge is current and possessing the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, attitudes, and clinical judgment to fulfil their role.
4. Identifying when HCAs require assistance, competency, and/or assignment is beyond their education and/or ability and ensuring assistance is sought out.
5. Participating in complaint resolution with the team, clients, family members, or others and ensuring the complaint is addressed or communicated to the appropriate person to ensure follow-up is completed.
6. Engaging in a self‐assessment process in the Continuing Competency Program with the CLPNA.
7. Developing the therapeutic nurse-client relationship and applying the ethical framework of this relationship.
8. Promoting and advocating for clients rights.
9. Adhering to all legal requirements of nursing practice and documentation.
10. Maintaining client confidentiality in written, oral and electronic communication.
11. Formulating clinical decisions that are consistent with client needs and priorities. Implementing evidence-informed nursing interventions based on assessments findings, client preferences and desired outcomes.
12. Demonstrating leadership within the health-care team through supervision and mentoring of Health Care Aides.
13. Supporting the health care aids in progressing their competencies and delegating tasks to them as needed and within their competencies.
14. Contributing to a culture of safety, identifying safety concerns, and ensuring safety concerns are addressed.
Requirements:
1. Current and active registration in good standing with the College of Licensed Practical Nurse of Alberta.
2. Maintain certification in First Aid & CPR Level C.
3. Satisfactory current criminal record check.
4. Have a considerable knowledge and understanding of persons with mental illness and other disabilities.
5. Effective communication, leadership, motivations, and people skills.
6. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
7. Ability to make effective decisions in challenging situations.
