Across its districts, NSPHA provides more than 11,200 safe, affordable homes as part of its Housing Services to seniors and families. District offices manage the day-to-day operations of Nova Scotia’s housing stock. Their responsibilities include administering tenant applications and placements, collecting rent, resolving tenant issues, and maintaining and repairing properties.

About Our Opportunity

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Worker / Painter is responsible for carrying out material and equipment installations, renovations, repairs, and servicing in the following areas – carpentry, plumbing, heating, basic electrical, painting and ventilation on properties under the jurisdiction of Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Maintain and repair buildings and properties under the jurisdiction of Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency, including maintenance and repairs of walks, driveways, and parking areas.
  • Install, maintain, and repair the following finished carpentry components: door jambs, doors, exterior fascia, soffits, railings and wood trim, counters, cupboards, shelving, windows, glass, and screening.
  • Replace and repair asphalt and wood shingles, siding, building paper, gable, eave and roof vents, eaves trough, conductor pipe and flashing.
  • Restore and install finishes such as drywall, including taping and filling, suspended ceilings, barker board, ceramic tile, flooring including tile, sheet-vinyl, stair nosings and rubber mats.
  • Maintain and repair sanitary drainage and venting systems, domestic hot and cold-water systems, exhaust and air supply systems, heating systems components, domestic hot water heating systems and plumbing fixtures and trim.
  • Prepare interior and exterior surfaces and apply paint, stain, varnish, and associated sealers.
  • Prepare and complete documentation such as work orders, vehicle reports, maintenance logs, inspection reports, and inventory records.
  • Repair vacant units to make them rent-ready.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 or equivalent, plus five years’ experience in building and property maintenance or a related field. Must be able to perform basic tasks in carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, painting and drywall.
  • Knowledge of residential building technology, basic knowledge of National Building Code and Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Ability to operate electrical and mechanical tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of computer systems.
  • Possess excellent organizational skills and ability to establish priorities.
  • Detail oriented, accurate, and able to analyze data and trouble shoot as required.
  • Ability to interact with the public and tenants in an appropriate manner on job sites.
  • Possess a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes.

Assets

  • Preference will be given to candidates who possess a minimum of five years’ experience in painting.
