Across its districts, NSPHA provides more than 11,200 safe, affordable homes as part of its Housing Services to seniors and families. District offices manage the day-to-day operations of Nova Scotia’s housing stock. Their responsibilities include administering tenant applications and placements, collecting rent, resolving tenant issues, and maintaining and repairing properties.
About Our Opportunity
Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Painter is responsible for carrying out minor drywall, exterior cladding and finish repairs, surface preparation, and application of finishes such as paint, stain, varnish and wallpaper, urethane, shellac, and rust inhibitors, including sanding, cleaning, caulking materials, putty, concrete, wood fillers, patch, fill and prime damage to drywall, plaster, and ceramic surfaces. The incumbent is also responsible for moving and replacing furniture, equipment, photographs, remove all installed electrical plates, light fixtures, finished hardware, etc. prior to paint application and utilize drop cloths and other protective coverings including masking tape to avoid paint splatter.
Primary Accountabilities
- Patch, fill and prime damage to drywall, plaster and ceramic surfaces and re-nail and carry out minor repairs to areas of exterior siding, etc. prior to finishing application.
- Carry out surface preparation and install or remove wall coverings including wallpaper as required.
- Move and replace furniture, equipment, photographs, etc. prior to paint application and utilize drop cloths and other protective coverings including masking tape to avoid paint splatter.
- Remove and reinstall electrical plates, lighting fixtures, finished hardware and mailboxes, etc.
- Apply all finished materials including paint, stain, varnish, urethane, shellac, rust inhibitors, etc.
- Store all volatile painting related materials in a safe manner and in accordance with NSPHA and occupational health and safety procedures and requirements.
- Identify, as requested, causes of paint failure such as blistering, caulking, etc. and recommend remedial action.
Qualifications and Experience
- Grade 12 or equivalent, plus five years’ experience in painting trade.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety
- Ability to properly handle chemicals and must be physically able to perform work while using good body mechanics.
- Ability to safely operate electrical and mechanical tools and equipment.
- Ability to interact with the public and tenants in an appropriate manner on job sites.
- Possess a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes.
Assets
- Competency in Yardi Property Management software.
- Current Emergency First Aid and/or WHMIS certifications.
