CASP is a division of the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS). The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) helps protect society by independently, effectively, and fairly conducting prosecutions and appeals at all levels of court. With approximately 550 Crown Counsel throughout British Columbia, the BCPS is divided into CASP, Headquarters, and five regions - North, Interior, Fraser, Vancouver, and Vancouver Island-Powell River.
Criminal Appeals and Special Prosecutions (CASP) is responsible for the following areas of practice:
(1) All indictable criminal appeals undertaken to the Court of Appeal for British Columbia and the Supreme Court of Canada, [Criminal Appeals Section];
(2) Prosecutions involving commercial crime, allegations against police, and regulatory offences including environmental and workplace injury and fatality related prosecutions [Commercial, Police, & Regulatory Prosecution Section];
(3) Organized and major crime prosecutions;
(4) Providing prosecutorial litigation support to other prosecution offices within the BCPS in respect of constitutional challenges that arise in the trial courts [Prosecution Support Unit];
(5) The delivery of legal resources and learning and development opportunities for the BCPS;
(6) CASP is also responsible for coordinating French and bilingual prosecutions.
The Paralegal position provides services to Crown Counsel within the BCPS on large, complex, sensitive, high-profile cases which impact the delivery of Branch and Ministry objectives. These services include: the management of case information/disclosure/redaction/witnesses; preliminary case-related research and analysis, including noting up of cases, assessing and summarizing material; the coordination of communication flow among parties involved in a case; training in case-related procedures and technology; and BCPS project planning and implementation.

Job Requirements:
Level 1-2 (Paralegal 14-15):
• Three years of experience working in a legal office environment or equivalent.
• One year of post-secondary education (with an academic focus) in a related field.
• Preference may be given to those currently enrolled in the Paralegal Citation Program, Paralegal Certificate Program, Paralegal Diploma Program, or Paralegal Degree Program.
• Preference may be given to applicants with a Paralegal Citation, Paralegal Certificate, Paralegal Diploma, or Paralegal Degree.
• Preference may be given to applicants with experience working as a Legal Assistant, Senior Legal Analyst, or Paralegal in the area of criminal law or a criminal justice setting.
• Preference may be given to applicants with experience in the BC Prosecution Service.
• Preference may be given to those with experience in Ringtail and/or with Ledger-based files.
Level 3-4 (Paralegal 16-17):
• Four years of experience working in a legal office environment or equivalent.
• Completion of one year of the Paralegal Citation Program, Paralegal Certificate Program, Paralegal Diploma Program, or Paralegal Degree Program.
• Preference may be given to applicants with a Paralegal Citation, Paralegal Certificate, Paralegal Diploma, or Paralegal Degree.
• Preference may be given to applicants with experience working as a Legal Assistant, Senior Legal Analyst or Paralegal in the area of criminal law or a criminal justice setting.
• Preference may be given to applicants with experience in the BC Prosecution Service.
• Preference may be given to those with experience in Ringtail and/or with Ledger-based files.
Full Working Level (Paralegal 18):
• Secondary school graduation and completion of a recognized Paralegal Certificate, Paralegal Diploma, Paralegal Citation or Paralegal Degree.
• Five years of experience working in a legal office environment.
• Preference may be given to applicants with experience working as a Legal Assistant, Senior Legal Analyst, or Paralegal in the area of criminal law or a criminal justice setting.
• Preference may be given to applicants with experience in the BC Prosecution Service.
• Preference may be given to those with experience in Ringtail and/or with Ledger-based files.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 3 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
