Job Summary
Contribute to the administration of justice in a diverse legal environment
The Human Rights Tribunal is an independent quasi-judicial Tribunal established by the Human Rights Code ("Code" ) to provide dispute resolution services in human rights matters. The Tribunal receives, mediates, and adjudicates complaints in human rights matters.
The paralegal position provides services to HRT Legal Counsel and the HRT Chair. These services are for conduct of HRT internal dispute resolution activities, support for Members and the Tribunal in respect of its practices and procedures, and for judicial review or appeal of HRT decisions to BC Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, and on occasion the Supreme Court of Canada. This position may also support with investigations by the Office of the Ombudsperson.
Job Requirements:
  • Paralegal Certificate/Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in a related field from a recognized institution plus

o two or more years of experience as a paralegal, or
o three or more years' recent (within the last 5 years) experience as a Legal Assistant or in an equivalent role working in a legal office environment handling confidential material.
  • A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered in lieu of a certificate or degree.
  • Professional or volunteer experience that includes the following:

o the interpretation and application of legislation, regulations and policies;
o drafting legal documents such as pleadings and affidavits;
o applying the theories and principles of administrative law including procedural fairness and natural justice;
o providing competent, timely, respectful, quality service to the public in a high-volume, fast paced environment;
o managing a high-volume caseload;
o working respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience working in a near paperless environment, using only online or computer-based systems to manage work, document outcomes and record statistical data.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
  • Experience working in an administrative tribunal or working on petitions for judicial review.
  • Experience with human rights or administrative law.

About this Position:

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill both current and/or future permanent vacancies.
