Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Surgery, Obstetrics, Pharmacy, Dialysis and Outpatient Clinics, the Physician Assistant (PA) will work with our interdisciplinary team primarily in screening, initial assessment, treatment and monitoring of general surgery, orthopedic and gynecological patients presenting for routine procedures, urgent care needs and elective and non-elective surgery. The PA role will be focused on Perioperative care for the in-patient setting.
In general, the PA will work under the direct supervision of the Physician and will be responsible for patient navigation and flow improvement on the Surgical unit. The candidate’s responsibilities may vary depending on the specific needs of the patients and the support required within the surgical program. Responsibilities include thorough patient assessment, comprehensive physical exams, ordering and interpreting medical investigations such as blood results, imaging and other diagnostic procedures, performing minor procedures, diagnosing and treating illness and providing patient and family consults and will maintain detailed medical documentation, including consult notes, progress notes, discharge summaries, admission orders and discharge orders. Other specific duties and additional opportunities to support the Surgical programs development will be assigned as the PA’s skill set evolves.
Department/Unit/Program Description
The 4th Floor Surgical Unit is comprised of both medical and surgical patients which have various complexities such as CHF, COPD, bowel obstructions to general medicine cases. The surgical cases range from orthopedics, general surgery, eye, women’s health and urology.
Essential Qualifications
- Graduate of a Physician Assistant Program (Canadian/US) or equivalent.
- Certification by the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada or the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
- Flexible with superior organization skills and the ability to work efficiently to prioritize multiple, competing tasks in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion, make decisions and take initiative while working with confidential patient information and responding to patient inquiries
- Superior work ethic, professionalism and reliability; demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer service
- Superior written/oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills; ability to effectively convey factual information and detailed explanations
- Exposure to Lean principles, an understanding of methodologies and tools and a commitment to the use of these in support of providing the best healthcare experience possible to our patients
- Demonstrated a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues, volunteers and other members of the community and public
- Must have satisfactory performance record

Hours of Work
Must be available to work days Monday to Friday. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements
