We currently have an opportunity for:

Program Coordinator

Kinark Outdoor Centre – Minden, ON

2 Openings – 7 month contract (April-October)

40 hours/week - $19-$21 an hour


Job Summary:

The Kinark Outdoor Centre (KOC) facilitates a range of outdoor activities and therapeutic recreation that are educational and experiential. Some programs are customized specifically to meet the needs of our diverse client population including children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. Other programs include elementary and secondary schools, faith based organizations, Cadets and groups with complex needs.


Working with the Program Supervisors, the Program Coordinator (PO)will design, plan and implement a variety of outdoor recreational programs for children, families, adults and youth visiting the Kinark Outdoor Centre. For the duration of each program, the PO will act as direct support for program staff to ensure participants are supported and enjoying their time at camp. While not formally supervising staff, PO’s act as a mentor to the Outdoor Program Facilitators, supervise program delivery and provide feedback to aid in professional development. The PO will additionally assist with waterfront and challenge course operations, program maintenance and will have an on-call responsibility related to the facility and program.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Interact directly with children, families and all other visitors to the Kinark Outdoor Centre and have fun!
  • Act as leader and mentor to program staff and participants. Maintain professional relationships with all staff and clients.
  • Assist program staff in facilitation of KOC programs and provide support to their day-to-day operations.
  • Create and ensure a safe and positive environment for staff and clients.
  • Communicate goals of visit, safety requirements, and client needs to program staff, program supervisors, kitchen and maintenance departments.
  • Develop and deliver individualized program packages for groups, including: schools, faith-based youth groups, family programs, and respite programs.
  • Aid in the administration and implementation of autism specific programs.
  • Assist in the delivery of training for Outdoor Program Facilitators in collaboration with the Program Supervisors.
  • Act as an emergency contact person and perform on-call duties on a rotating basis for KOC.
  • Assist in facility preparation and equipment maintenance.
  • Assist with Waterfront and Challenge Course supervision.
  • Comply with safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and safe waterfront activities at all times.
  • Ensure client safety at all times.

Qualifications and Expectations:

  • Degree or Diploma in Outdoor Education, Physical Education, Special Education, Therapeutic Recreation, Child and Youth Worker, or a related field. **
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR C are required.
  • Current National Lifeguard Certification or willingness to obtain (the Kinark Outdoor Centre will reimburse for the cost of obtaining or recertifying certification).
  • Administrative experience an asset. **
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, time-management and communication skills.
  • Experience working in a child care setting.
  • Work experience in swimming, canoeing, kayaking, environmental programming and large group facilitation.
  • Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in camp activities which include, but are not limited to, hiking, canoeing, swimming, team building initiatives, building campfires, physical games, and activities.
  • Pleasure Craft Operators License or ability to obtain.
  • Must have the ability to restrain and physically support children when needed for safety in general KOC activities. Training will be provided.
  • Police Record Check (including a Vulnerable Sector Screening) and Pre-Employment Medical required.

  • Coordinators are scheduled to work 40 hours a week, including evenings and weekends.
