POSITION SUMMARY: Accountable to the Plant Manager, is responsible for the quality control function at the plant level. Supervises quality control inspectors in the performance of their duties. The major objectives of the quality control program are:
(a) To satisfy the customer by giving them the quality of product they have asked for and can reasonably expect;
(b) To reduce the variation in manufacturing processes and produce work in process and finished goods desirable level of quality;
(c) To minimize costs by keeping returns, scrap, sorting costs and other forms of waste to a minimum.
Receives corporate functional direction and guidance relative to corporate-wide quality standards and quality control procedures to include inspection, testing and reporting.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Complies with all EHS policies, procedures and safe work instructions in place. Complies with SOX audit requirements.
Responsible for the training and supervision of quality control inspectors in their assigned duties.
Develops training programs for personnel under his/her supervision. Assists production supervisors in assuring that they have all the necessary information and/or samples to manufacture a job in compliance with all applicable specifications. Reviews and approves job jackets prior to production. Performs quality audits as necessary to assure that the total quality system is producing the desired level of quality. Works closely with production management and supervision when sub-standard or defective material is discovered to assure proper disposition, determine cause, and prevent further defective production. Closely monitors all sorting operations to assure that proper go/no-go standards are available and are being followed and that sorting is yielding the desired results and is cost effective. Establishes and maintains customer specification files; i.e. color standards, drawings, samples, etc.
Secures and maintains a file of production samples including those from other branch plants as necessary. Inspects customer rejections at customer's facility, or after returned to Pactiv, to validate complaint as necessary.
Schedules, trains and all disciplinary action as required.
Schedules all department vacations and coverage as necessary. Investigates customer complaints, coordinating and expediting with production staff. At times, represents the company in negotiations with customers in solving quality problems and disputes and in establishing quality levels and control methods. Keeps current on new developments in inspection, test equipment and quality control techniques that pertain to the processes and products of the company. At the request of and under the direction of the Plant Manager or Corporate Quality Assurance Manager, performs duties such as investigating and/or following up on specific quality related problems. At the request of and under the direction of the Corporate Quality Assurance Manager, coordinates special research and product development projects for the company. Maintains control over raw material quality through incoming inspection as necessary.
Coordinates with production and purchasing departments materials problems and rejections and provides necessary data to support vendor claims.
Trained in pest control and sanitation, administers, and is responsible for the plant sanitation and pest control program, as outlined by American Sanitation Institute's Good Manufacturing Practices. Assists in developing and implementing waste control programs, prepares, and distributes daily waste reports. Maintains records deemed necessary by the Plant Manager and the Corporate Quality Assurance Manager to document and analyze product quality. Keeps Plant Manager and Corporate Quality Assurance Manager informed of quality control activities by means of the weekly quality summary report and monthly sorting cost report. Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the Plant Manager or the Corporate Quality Assurance Manager.
