Job Summary
As the Safety Officer at Gitxsan Development Corporation, you will be the primary point of contact for all matters related to health and safety within our operations. Your role will be crucial in developing, implementing, and enforcing safety policies that comply with the highest standards. Through your expertise, you will foster a culture of safety, reduce risks, and ensure a safe working environment for everyone involved.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement comprehensive safety plans tailored to each project, ensuring compliance with BC and federal health and safety regulations.
- Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential hazards and develop strategies to mitigate these risks effectively. Ensure workers under your supervision are aware of all known hazards.
- Lead health and safety training sessions for all site personnel, including employees, contractors, and subcontractors, ensuring they are informed of and comply with safety standards. Investigate incidents and near misses, prepare detailed reports, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Perform regular safety audits and inspections to ensure ongoing compliance with safety policies and regulations.
- Develop and oversee emergency preparedness plans, including conducting emergency response drills.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all health and safety activities, including training, inspections, and investigations.
- Serve as a key advisor on health and safety issues, providing guidance and support to management and staff.
- Ensure the health and safety of all workers under your direct supervision.
- Know the WorkSafeBC requirements that apply to the work under your supervision and make sure those requirements are met.
- Ensure workers under your supervision have the appropriate personal protective equipment, which is being used properly, regularly inspected, and maintained.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in occupational health and safety or related field is preferred.
- Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or equivalent is strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a health and safety role within the construction, safety services industry.
- Comprehensive knowledge of BC and federal health and safety legislation, regulations, and best practices.
- Proven ability to develop and deliver effective health and safety training programs.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of individuals and groups.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing potential safety issues.

Salary: $49,704.29-$89,000.00 per year
