Job Summary
Be an active part of BC's reconciliation process
The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation is responsible for British Columbia's electricity, alternative energy, mining and petroleum resource sectors, and supporting work to meet BC's greenhouse gas reduction targets.
The Ministry's Responsible Mining and Competitiveness Division is responsible for delivering trusted and effective regulatory and authorization processes, policies, science and information that support mining sector competitiveness, advance Indigenous reconciliation and foster sustainability in mining practices.
The Senior Advisor, Indigenous Relations provides leadership to processes for consultation and supports the Ministry in the regulation of mining projects. This position examines controversial proposals of high economic value for use of natural resources and determines the impact on First Nations' identified or potential rights and title. This position carries out consultation and negotiations to address concerns of First Nations and meet the Crown's duty to consult while minimizing negative impacts on provincial revenues and other rights holders. This position also provides training and leadership to Ministry staff in Indigenous relations and leads implementation of new systems for consultation and engagement.

Job Requirements:
  • Degree in a resource management field plus a minimum of three (3) years of related experience; or,
  • Diploma in a resource management field plus a minimum of five (5) years of related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Related Experience must include all of the following:
  • Experience in participating in consultation/negotiations with First Nations.
  • Experience conducting research and analysis related to land use, resource management, social or economic development issues.
  • Experience in policy development and/or implementation.

Preference may be given to applicants:
  • Who identify as Indigenous, and/or,
  • Who demonstrate familiarity with mining and BC's mining regulatory framework.

Provisos:
  • Must possess a valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent.
  • Must be willing and able to travel.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position can be based in any of the following Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation offices: Smithers, Prince George, Kamloops, Cranbrook, Victoria or Vancouver.
Depending on the successful candidate's location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to three (3) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
This position is also posted as a Licensed Science Officer (Other) 3 via Requisition 110197 .
