Alamos Gold’s Island Gold is one of Canada’s highest grade and lowest cost gold mines. This underground operation is located just east of the town of Dubreuilville, 83 kilometres northeast of Wawa in Northern Ontario. Through ongoing exploration success, Island Gold’s Mineral Reserves and Resources have continued to grow in size and quality, and Alamos is now investing in a major expansion project which is expected to transform Island into one of the largest and most profitable mines in Canada with an 18-year mine life. Reports to: General Manager

Location: Island Gold Mine - Dubreuilville

Role Overview/Purpose:

A member of the Human Resources Leadership Team (HRLT), the HRSS has a dual role overseeing all functions of Human Resources as well as overseeing the daily operation of the Island Gold 500 room camp facility and daily charter operations. Reporting to the Mine General Manager, and working in close collaboration with Vice President Human Resources, the Human Resources Site Superintendent (HRSS) is a strategic partner to the General Manager and site leadership to foster attraction, growth and retention of our people. The HRSS will participate in program design and facilitate the execution of company-wide and site-specific people programs, act as a partner to the business and business partner to peers, oversee a team of Human Resources professionals at site, provide advice, guidance, and oversight in all areas of Human Resources. The incumbent will be proactive, responsive, a strong and positive communicator, strike the right balance with strategic thinking and operational effectiveness and act in alignment with Alamos values.

Primary Responsibilities:

Human Resources

  • Lead the execution of our Global People strategy at site
  • Provide input to the design of HR programs and initiatives and ensure they are effectively communicated, implemented, and actively managed at site
  • Provide advice and guidance to managers and employees on people programs, processes, operating procedures, employment matters, legislation, and day to-day employee matters ensuring advice and practices foster a positive work environment and are consistent with company standards
  • Lead all aspects of the employee life cycle (attraction, on-boarding, performance management, talent management, learning and development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging, succession, wellness, compensation and benefits, transition planning)
  • Effectively manage employee relations, build positive strategies to proactively address employee matters and serve as a role model for addressing issues and conflict resolution
  • Lead all employee exit procedures, including calculation of severance, preparation of packages, leading adjustment measures and meeting with affected employees; effectively manage risk and employee experience
  • Actively lead the Human Resources team, providing direction, coaching and development
  • Serve as a role model to the Human Resources team and with peers
  • Accurately manage the budget, including and not limited to effective forecasting of local HR related expenditures and allocation of resources and strong collaboration with corporate groups to gain approvals as required
  • Build a site environment that is consistent with Alamos' values.
  • Oversee the accurate, effective, and timely administration of all people programs in alignment with our People strategy and in compliance with company practices
  • Oversee accurate and timely reporting of key metrics for communication at site and for roll-up of global reporting
  • Identify and communicate business insights derived from data and operational involvement to enable primary responsibilities and contribute to future program development in the spirit of continuous improvement

Logistics

  • Lead the execution and administration of Logistic processes and procedures as it pertains to air travel, food services, and housing for our contractors and employees.
  • Manage the human, financial and operational resources of the Logistics department
  • With other department heads on strategic development, and work with senior management in meeting objectives as it pertains to the camp facilities.
  • Formulate the annual operating and capital budgets for the department consistent with Alamos' established financial guidelines and business planning process.
  • Oversees the implementation of processes, policies, systems and practices within logistics that maximize operational efficiencies.
  • Identify the requirements of the camp and manage the delivery of quality services including food, cleaning, housekeeping, and laundry, ensuring the camp environment meets health and safety standards and supports operational objective
  • Manage relationships with vendors providing hospitality related services and products and ensure ‘best of breed’ service and competitive prices.
  • Forecast camp staffing requirements and supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff. Coordinate on-call staff scheduling to provide after-hours or emergency coverage.
  • Manage the vendor relationship with airlines providing flight transportation including contract/rate negotiations.
  • Manage the regular cleaning of bunkhouses, office spaces, apartment
  • Develop and monitor policies, procedures and budgets required for effective camp operations.
  • Manage the regular need, requirements and bookings for:
    • All flights from various staging points to Wawa, ON for all mine site personnel including contractors and visitor
    • Ground transportation (busing, pick-up, van fleet usage and ground transportation when flights are not available because of weather
    • Manage the bunkhouse availability for all site personnel including contractors and visitor

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:

  • University degree (Bachelors) in social sciences or business with specialization in Human Resources; CHRL preferred; Masters degree an asset
  • A minimum of 10 years progressive human resource experience in a fast-paced, operationally focused environment; mining or resource sector experience an asset
  • A minimum of 5 years leading teams and people;
  • Knowledge of applicable provincial and federal employment legislation;
  • Strong discernment and understanding of financial information;
  • Experience building rapport with Indigenous and local communities an asset
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office, payroll and human resource information systems;
  • Excellent communication, organization, analytical, and digital literacy are required, with an ability to facilitate commitment to a team effort.
  • The ability to resolve problems and make sound business decisions while working independently;
  • Willingness and ability to work extra hours and on call when required; and
  • Bilingualism (French and English) is an asset.

Working Conditions: This position is based at the Island Gold site working on a rotation schedule of 4 days on site followed by 3 days at home. Flights are available from Toronto, Sudbury, and Rouyn- Noranda, QC.
