The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $59,180 - $66,608 starting salary determined by the PEA .

Performance range: starting salary to max of $77,666 is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Department Chair and informally to the Supervisor IT Team Lead, the Systems Administrator works as part of a team to ensure the operational effectiveness of the departments' servers, storage and Research/Teaching lab workstations. On a day-to-day basis, this position works closely with the IT Team Lead and other team members. The department's undergraduate student count varies between terms with counts of 1200+ during the summer and 3500+ during the Fall and Winter terms. In addition to undergraduates, we have 130 graduate students, 15 staff and 53 regular and emeritus faculty members. They also provide technical expertise to researchers upon request to support private research infrastructure.

As the department is part of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, this position and the department's IT support team must participate in the Faculty's IT governance structure and work collaboratively with the Faculty's IT Team.

The Systems Administrator will assist with the maintenance and support of information systems, as well as analysis, design, and development of new innovative services. This position has the responsibility to uphold and comply with the relevant sections of the UVic Information Security Standards.

Functions include:
  • Installation, configuration, and maintenance of hardware and software, problem determination/resolution, resource allocation, performance and security monitoring, configuration management, and usage reporting in a dynamic heterogeneous environment.
  • Deploy and maintain operating systems and application software to current operational and security standards.
  • Providing specialist advice and training on technology and methodology to faculty, students and staff.
  • Set-up and maintain systems of the department's undergraduate labs.
  • Support in-depth analysis and investigation of business/functional requirements, development, maintenance and enhancement of information systems.
  • Interact with various research groups and faculty members to ensure their computing environments are in working order.
  • Assess, address, and implement system/network security concerns and business continuity processes.
  • Creation of documentation related to the implementation and maintenance of information systems.
  • Per the Information Security Policy and Associated Procedures (IM7800):
  • Reports information security incidents to their supervisor, Administrative Authority, and University Systems immediately upon discovery.
  • Assists in the investigation and resolution of security incidents in a timely manner, preserving evidence where required, and working under the direction of University Systems
This position requires the incumbent to have significant problem-solving skills to analyze and correct software and hardware problems and to automate administration tasks. The incumbent also must possess effective communications skills in order to provide technical assistance and advice to Computer Science faculty, staff and student community.

Normal business hours are from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM with some flexibility, but work outside of regular business hours on an emergency or prescheduled basis may be required.

Job Requirements

This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or other relevant discipline plus at least one (1) year of experience in system administration preferably in a large enterprise environment.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Attention to detail is required, as is the ability to understand complex technical concepts
  • Strong problem-solving abilities; must be able to effectively identify and resolve unusual and com-plex technical problems.
  • Effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities and work under pressure to meet time sensitive and mission critical deadlines in a complex environment;
  • Use task specific network tools such as debugging software and system logs to troubleshoot complex network issues;
  • Take initiative and work with limited direction;
  • Work both independently and collaboratively;
  • Good written and verbal communications skills; and,
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with Windows Server and Client OS.
  • Experience with Ubuntu and some exposure to RedHat Enterprise Linux.
  • Working knowledge of Bash, Ruby and Python.
  • Working knowledge of DEB/APT, and exposure to RPM/YUM/DNF (building packages and maintaining repositories).
  • Experience with automated deployment (Terraform), configuration management (Chef) and orchestration tools.
  • Knowledge of container based and VM based cloud technologies (Kubernetes, and PAAS).
  • Knowledge of Netapp Enterprise Storage technologies.
Assets/Preferences:
  • Experience with MacOS.
  • Experience with Windows Deployment Services (WDS) and Windows Update Services (WSUS).
  • Knowledge in system and application development methodologies.
  • Software package management (Ubuntu DEB, RPM).
  • Web server administration (Apache, Nginx).
  • Database administration (MySQL, Postgresql, MongoDB).
