Job description

The Position(s): Our district is seeking a BC-certified

teacher (or be in the process of certification with the BC Teacher Regulation Branch)

for a 1.0 Limited Duration Contract position:

1.0 FTE Limited DurationIndigenous Education Lead Teacher- Mackenzie, BC

This is a 1 year seconded position effective September 1, 2023. Applicants with Indigenous ancestry are preferred.

The District is seeking an Indigenous Education Teacher specifically for its Indigenous Education Department. Successful candidates with experience in Elementary and/or Secondary schools are being considered. Candidates will have a strong understanding of Indigenous pedagogy, Indigenous language, Indigenous culture, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, BC Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, and specializes in a wide range of instructional areas.

The following attributes are required:

Ability to develop and act as a Lead Teacher for a wide range of instructional programs (i.e. literacy, numeracy, Social Studies, Art, English First Peoples, First Nations Studies etc.

Ability to provide Indigenous Cultural programming and coordinate District Cultural Activities.

Qualifications:

A minimum of 3 years teaching experience in British Columbia public school system.

Membership (or qualify for membership) in the BC College of Teachers and possess a current teaching certificate.

Working experience with Indigenous students, performing and analyzing educational research and methodology for instructing Indigenous students.

Ability to successfully model proven Indigenous teachings methodologies to other District teachers and support staff.

Ability to demonstrate strong leadership and teamwork competencies in all areas of Indigenous Education.

Ability to review and recommend appropriate learning resources specific to Indigenous content.

Specialized methodologies, adaptations, and modifications of programs with Indigenous content specific to Indigenous learning and Indigenous ways of knowing.

Ability to increase cultural knowledge and its application to direct curriculum links.

The ability to communicate and work effectively with students, staff, parents and administration.

The ability to work collaboratively as a member of the district team.

Indigenous language fluency or language development considered an asset.

Duties:

Collaborate, co-plan and co-teach with Early Years to Grade twelve teachers

Experience with and demonstrated knowledge of local Indigenous heritage and cultures and able to mentor and provide professional development for educators

Knowledge, understanding and sensitivity of the effects and impacts of historical educational experiences of Indigenous peoples, including transgenerational trauma

Ability to incorporate trauma-sensitive practices into teaching practices

Ability to cultivate and nurture positive relationships with learners and families of Indigenous ancestry

Relationship-based ability to facilitate the development of strategies that will enhance the personal, social/emotional, cultural and educational development of Indigenous learners

Ability to consult with Indigenous community members, including parents/caregivers, and SD57 staff to support advocacy of Indigenous learners

Leading cross curricular learning demonstrations for teachers on the land

Leading monthly after school learning sessions for district staff

Designing further methods to support teacher understanding of land-based learning to support Indigenous student success

Experience with adapting curriculum to meet the needs of students and coaching for equity

A willingness to work on teacher teams to collaborate regarding curriculum, assessment, instruction and planning

Needs to have experience working with other teachers in team teaching and experience with direct instruction of emotional regulation and self-regulation to at-risk students

Commitment to working with colleagues on staff development activities linked to the School Improvement Plan

Cognizant of the outcomes and evaluation processes outlined in the new curriculum

Strong classroom management skills

Computer literate and able to use a variety of applications for classroom instruction and required paperwork

Excellent interpersonal skills

Assessment practices supportive of the learning process

Commitment to continuous professional learning

Reports to the Vice Principal of Language and Culture
