Job Title : Telecom Microwave Technologist 
Location : C09 - Richview TS - 65 Kelfield Street, Rexdale, ON M9W 5A3

Job Function:
-Perform installation, maintenance, repair and testing work on analogue and digital transmission equipment, data switching and routing devices of Hydro One-owned network. Under the direction of the Integrated Technology Management Centre (ITMC) duty staff, set up monitor systems and networks using network management packages to identify and isolate problems. Carry out equipment modifications as required and maintain a spare parts inventory.  Frequent travel to different job sites across southern Ontario will be required.
General Responsibilities:
-Perform equipment installation and removal of telecommunications equipment, racks, cabling, batteries, and power plants at Hydro One, 3rd party service providers, and external customer locations. Receive and review work orders, identifying any inaccuracies, omissions, or incompatibilities in equipment components. Follow up with other departmental staff to resolve identified problems. Install and connect a wide variety of cable types (twisted pairs, fibre optics, coax, etc.). Connect Hydro One-owned cables and equipment to demarcation points of service providers’ facilities. Test, calibrate and adjust components, where necessary, to ensure the proper operation of the installed equipment. 
-Under direction of ITMC duty staff, perform long term monitoring of production and test networks and systems. Use a computer terminal to collect status and performance data and analyze data to identify & locate problems. Inform ITMC of the likely problem sources, and correct any problems through the terminal if possible, or by locating the problem equipment and replacing it. Attempt to locate intermittent problems by monitoring faulty equipment to detect patterns.
-Perform repair work on telecommunication equipment and networks and operational spare parts. Perform preliminary trouble diagnostics with assistance of test equipment if applicable, contacting clients to assess nature of the reported problem and to determine possible cause of failure. Use resource information to draw necessary materials from stock and proceed with assignment in accordance with on-going unit work routines. Use diagnostic software packages and a variety of test equipment to determine failed component. Seek direction from Supervisor when problem cannot be isolated quickly or if problem remains unresolved after normal work routines. Replace faulty components with spares. Perform preventative maintenance work. Prepare and submit trouble ticket log entries, maintenance records in accordance to departmental procedures, and input changes to the network management system as necessary.  Connect portable diesel generator in the event of AC power failure.
-Perform equipment repair work in the telecommunication maintenance shop. Do bench repair on network equipment and electronic devices. Verify characteristics of electronic components. Refurbish and rebuild small components including dismantling, identifying and replacing defective parts, and performing testing routines to ensure restoration of device to operate in accordance with design specifications.
-Carry out equipment modifications in accordance with manufacturers’ updates and technical instructions. As specifically assigned, or as part of a service routine, replace old components for new and alter components and boards including rewiring as necessary.
-Maintain spare parts inventory at storage locations, including monitoring inventory levels, sourcing substitute components for legacy equipment, and ordering stock at the predetermined inventory levels. Order parts for particular assignments upon Supervisor’s authorization. Verify spare parts are operating within specification limits after they are repaired.
-Maintain test equipment of the department, including tracking where they are used and keeping their maintenance records. Arrange test equipment calibration at regular intervals as recommended by manufacturers.
-Keep abreast of technology through on-the-job training, following trends as reported in industry literature, and keep informed of new technology for which maintenance will be required.
-Perform work during non-regular business hours (evenings and weekends) for on-call duties for emergency repairs, and for scheduled work affecting customers.
-Perform other duties as required.
Selection Criteria:
-Requires a knowledge of electrical and electronic theory and related mathematics as they apply to voice, data and transmission telecommunications equipment and networks. Requires this knowledge to understand the theory and construction of analogue, digital and optical telecommunication equipment.
-Requires knowledge of analogue and digital microwave radio, multiplexer, data switching and routing devices. Requires knowledge of use of test equipment, test packages, and diagnostic methods and techniques in trouble-shooting to locate, isolate and resolve problems.
-Requires knowledge of network management system software including trouble ticketing and inventory management process to perform duties. This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of Grade XII in a Secondary, Commercial or Technical School plus a three-year course of concentrated study in the appropriate subjects such as Electronics Engineering Technology obtained in the Province of Ontario from a College of Applied Arts and Technology, Polytechnical Institute or Community College or by having the equivalent level of education.
-Requires experience to be familiar with the practical aspects of installation, maintenance, repair, modification and trouble-shooting work for analogue microwave radio, multiplexer, digital radio, digital transmission equipment, data terminals, switching and routing devices and cable connectors, interconnection with circuits and services provided by telephone companies such as Bell.
-Requires experience to be familiar with related test equipment and test packages, technical manuals, operating and maintenance processes and related standards, procedures, work routines, practices, work programs, and schedules.
-Requires experience to understand the specific telecommunication networks of Power System Telecom Services, business telecom and networks of Acronym Solutions Telecommunications customers, and to use the associated network management system to identify and isolate problems. Requires an understanding of common communication applications to identify likely source of problems.
-A period of up to four years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
