SUBJECT/
JOB TITLE: Activity Aide
REPORTING TO: Activity Coordinator/Supervisor
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Activity Supervisor, the Activity Aide will make the commitment to the Activity Department to collectively work together to provide the residents of Great Northern Retirement Home with planned, constructive, and enjoyable programs. These programs will maintain a rewarding, harmonious manner of fulfilling the residents holistically, physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially.
Education/Requirements:
- Experience working in Recreational Therapy Programs
- Experience working with the elderly community in social service, healthcare setting
- Possess characteristics that correlate with the facility mission statement; be genuine, sincere, caring, empathetic, and compassionate, while maintaining a professional relationship with residents, family members, other staff, and the community
- Excellent communication skills; written and oral
- Possess excellent organizational skills and time management
- Able to work collaboratively, as well as independently, and with minimal supervision
- Maintain a team approach to resident care, correlating/communicating with all departments
- Work flexible hours and call ins
- Actively show interest in Activity Aide role and be alert to residents
- Demonstrate concern, compassion, and interest in providing quality care and service to residents
- Be mentally and physically able to perform duties as outlined/assigned
- Proper use of general body mechanics, proper lifting techniques, and ability to identify workplace hazards
- While on duty, accept tasks assigned by supervisor, occasionally assist with other duties as required by direct supervisor or other supervisor staff
- Attend work in a neat, hygienic manner, and follow dress code
- Present a positive image of the facility to the public
- Ensure safety and promote independent living for our residents
- Attend all available in-services/educational programs provided by Great Northern Retirement Home that is pertinent to the position
- Respect all resident rights to dignity, privacy, respect, and the right to refuse, as outlined by the Resident’s Bill of Rights
- Advocate for resident’s rights, needs, and wishes in the facility and community
- Must adhere to all requirements of the Great Northern Retirement Home’s Employee Standard of Conduct
- Be knowledgeable of and practice in the Facility’s Fire Manual, Disaster Plan, WHMIS, and to work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Report any unsafe or hazardous working conditions and any equipment malfunction to your supervisor, verbally and possibly in written form
- Provide employer with current driver’s license in good standing (not mandatory)
Summary of Activity Aide Tasks:
- Prepare & set up programs as per monthly calendar/activity procedures binder
- Knock on resident doors to remind/gather residents for programs taking place
- Document daily resident attendance of activities and when required, document any concerns/information to report to supervisor
- Balance cash transactions during activities that require money and keep money in a specified envelop
- Sanitize the Activity Area and clean up after programs have been run
- Keep the Activity Office neat and tidy; this may require cleaning tasks
- Complete leisure assessments on new residents & review old assessment as required. *These can be designated to students as training
- Complete other tasks requested by the supervisor
Program Planning: Activity Aides are expected to assist in program planning and in the development of new, innovative programs, to meet the resident’s ever changing needs. **Programs include the following but are not limited to**

- Exercise classes
- Baking
- Mini putt
- Guest speakers
- Hymn sings
- Christmas Caroling

Job Types: Part-time, Casual
Salary: $20.00-$21.00 per hour
Expected hours: 1 – 24 per week
