What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will:- assist with the organization and scheduling of field and lab activities
- provide technical assistance and training to contract employees, students and collaborators
- purchase equipment and supplies
- develop and update field Standard and Safe Operating Procedures
- operate small commercial vessels (up to 24') in a safe manner
- be a Crew leader for field sampling including other technicians, summer students, and graduate students
- operate and maintain fishing gear and limnological gear to collect field data and samples
- perform biological sampling (e.g. fish and/or freshwater invertebrate species identification, length and weight, sex, maturity, diet analysis, etc)
- perform field collection and preparation of samples
- ensure the collection, entry, management and archiving of field data with the highest possible quality
- carry out data entry, word processing, basic data summary and analysis
- able to travel to remote locations frequently and for multiple days
- handle heavy equipment and work under adverse weather conditions
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
- You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
Scientific knowledge and skills:
- You have knowledge of aquatic ecology and biology including the areas of limnology, fisheries ecology, food web ecology and invasive species in order to work in the field and lab, and to successfully identify organisms in the delivery the inland lakes research program.
- You have knowledge of fisheries and aquatic ecology sampling techniques (e.g. hydro-acoustics, gillnetting, trap netting, seining, use of microscopes, drying ovens, particle analysis and stable isotope processing) in order to deliver a field and laboratory Aquatic Research program and follow standard and safe operating procedures.
- You have the proven ability to operate and maintain various types of aquatic gear, boats and motors, electrofishing equipment and limnological equipment in a safe and efficient manner in order to take aquatic samples and work in the field
- You have the demonstrated ability to identify and process fish and freshwater invertebrates, and collect other environmental data for Aquatic Research.
Communication skills:
- You have demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written skills and ability to communicate with the public, staff and clients with tact and good judgment in order to explain research programs or train staff/students.
Computers and data management skills:
- You have knowledge of sound data management principles in order to store, summarize, and use data as requested by the Research Scientists.
- You have the ability to use computer software for word processing, spreadsheet, data and database management in order to prepare written and data summaries about aquatic science.
Project management skills:
- You have the ability to lead and manage projects in order to coordinate and implement several research projects concurrently.
- You are able to work cooperatively with the staff, vessels and resources of other fisheries and aquatic science staff to achieve common/overlapping targets for sample and data collection.
Workplace safety knowledge:
- You have knowledge of safe boating and biological sampling practices in order to work safely in the field in large and small lake, river and wetland environments.
- You have knowledge of safe working practices regarding the use of hazardous chemicals in order to maintain excellent health and safety standards in an Aquatic Research laboratory.
- You have knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

- 1 English Temporary - Seasonal, duration up to 42 weeks, 2140 East Bank Dr, Peterborough, East Region
