We are looking for a Research & Development Technician at our Walker Compost & Packaging facility in Arthur, ON.
Reporting to the Research & Development Specialist-Environmental, this position will be responsible for supporting the design and execution of field and laboratory research trials and product development projects within the Growing Media Group. The Research & Development Technician will be responsible for experimental setup, troubleshooting, data collection and analysis, reporting and horticultural duties as required in accordance with the Walker Industries Health, Safety, and Environmental Policies. This is a permanent, full-time position working from Monday-Friday.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform tasks in the areas of sample collection/preparation, resampling, physical and chemical analysis, and reporting.
- Implement experimental setup, troubleshooting, data collection and analysis, reporting and horticultural duties as required.
- Maintain Laboratory using good workplace housekeeping practices, maintain and calibrate laboratory and testing equipment.
- Schedule and prioritize tasks to successfully manage multiple ongoing projects.
- Test and record physical and chemical properties such as moisture, pH level, temperatures and porosity.
- Provide insight into and interpretation of results, collecting data where required and generating data for reports.
- Research issues specific to production issues and provide suggestions for improvement.
- Maintain legible and detailed records (manual and electronic) and manage multiple data streams.
- Comply with all regulatory requirements (Ministry of Environment) and company policies/procedures as they pertain to this position.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of Safe Work Procedures (SOPs).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- University degree or college diploma in a related field such as biology, chemistry or environmental science/management. 1-3 years experience in a laboratory and production settings and/or operation of a process manufacturing facility or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, in oral and written form.
- Ability to understand technical manuals and scientific terminology applicable to operation.
- Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and data management skills.
- Must possess a valid G-Class Driver’s License.
- Must be able to lift up to (fifty) 50 pounds.
