Job Summary: Using their in-depth knowledge of polymer science, plastics processing, lab testing, and analytics, the Material Science Engineer will lead the Multy Group of Companies development of materials processed from post-industrial waste streams. Using customer or market requirements as a guide, the Material Science Engineer will develop waste formulations to resins, resin blends to recipes, and process and test recipes to validate suitability to market applications.
Responsibilities:
Performs analysis of customer or market requirements for end product performance specifications and where required, makes recommendations for resins or resin blends to meet requirements
Reviews product material requirements for performance (stiffness, hardness, dimensional tolerance, etc) and provides feasibility feedback to customer via the Multy Sales team.
Creates specifications for possible material formulations to meet requirements.
Coordinates to have base materials manufactured, purchased, or undertakes manufacturing in Cowansville if feasible.
Creates material blends for product trials and documents recipes and expected outcomes.
Performs product trials using either the Multy extrusion facilities, injection molding press, trial presses, or coordinates with Supply Chain team to have trials completed at 3rd party vendors.
Performs laboratory analysis of all trial samples including raw material, in-process, finished products, purified water, cleaning validation and stability samples using analytical instruments and established analytical procedures and techniques.
Outsources lab testing as required based on customer requirements that cannot be performed in-house.
Documents and compiles all observations and data obtained from testing as per established SOPs and good documentation practices.
Provides test feedback to customers via Multy Sales team with recommendations on next steps or possible changes required to meet requirements.
Works with the Multy product development and innovation teams to identify potential use cases for material science projects in end product applications.
Coordinates access to production equipment when required through the Production Planner to ensure that trials can be accommodated without causing production delivery issues to customers.
Coordinates any required access to production resources for trial purposes with the Site G.M. giving appropriate notice to ensure resources can be made available without jeopardizing production.
Assists the production team(s) with the launch of new materials or processes into the production environment with documentation, training, and troubleshooting as required.
Manages SRE&D process for all Multy activities including scoping projects, tracking time & resources, and working with 3P consultants to prepare and submit claims.
Provide periodic reports to Multy management (minimum weekly) to summarize activities, project status, test results, sample delivery schedule, and any other items required.
Works as a member of a team to achieve all outcomes.
Performs all work in accordance with all established regulatory and compliance and safety requirements.
Works in a safe manner collaborating as a team member to achieve all outcomes.
Ensure personal adherence with all compliance programs including the Global Business Ethics and Compliance Program, Global Quality policies and procedures, Safety and Environment policies, and HR policies.
Qualifications:
B.Sc. from a recognized educational institution in Chemistry, Material Science, Polymer Science or any related field and 5-10 years of relevant experience.
An advanced Chemistry or Polymer Science degree (PhD) would be an asset.
Prior experience with recycled plastics, waste materials processing, and conversions of reclaimed PP, PE, TPO, and EPDM as asset.
Knowledge of Excel, Word and other Microsoft Office Programs and/or laboratory software packages is an asset.
Good theoretical understanding of FT-IR, titration, UV and chromatography (TLC and column).
Thorough understanding of plastic processing techniques including extrusion and injection molding.
Some knowledge of plastic processing equipment and its’ operation.
Knowledge of ASTM or equivalent standards for plastic testing in various industries.
Design of Experiments, knowledge of Statistical Process Controls, Six-Sigma blackbelt knowledge are all preferred.
Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
Knowledge of GMP/GLP.
Problem solving ability.
Proven organization and time management skills as demonstrated through previous work and/or educational experience
