This position is not limited to the below description and you may be called upon to perform other duties, as business needs require.
- Monitors daily, the electrical conductivity (EC) and PH levels in the irrigation water feeding the plants.
- Monitor weekly environment control boxes by checking for alarms and adding distilled water and wicks as necessary to properly read the ambient temperature in the greenhouses.
- Using a meter to check the water content of the growing bags to see percentage of water content, temperature and fertilizer levels and record data in the computer database.
- Daily, mix fertilizer batches and monitor tank levels using the computer systems and notify the growers if alterations to the mix need to be made.
- Using a trolley, sulfur pots need to be filled and monitored to prevent powdery mildew.
- Weekly collection of water samples are conducted and sent to offsite laboratory for analysis, which directly impacts the future fertilizer batches.
- Conduct weekly inventory of all minerals and liquids used in the irrigation rooms.
- Perform the necessary steps for weekly plant registration, regarding thickness of the plant, length of leaves, growth progression from previous week to help the growers determine crop tasks.
- Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and organization of the irrigation rooms and acid tanks.
- Unload bees and open hives and place in proper locations throughout both greenhouses.
- Weekly monitoring of all pumps and filters both in the greenhouse and irrigation room.
- Work with the IPM Pest Scout; share responsibility for pest and disease control
- Verify/validate scouting reports to confirm accuracy and reliability
- Maintain a safe and legally compliant workplace and assist with Food Safety and Health & Safety compliance reporting and maintaining/completing all paperwork pertaining to Food Safety
- Identify, investigate, correct and document potential environmental and safety problems
- Create an environment of mutual respect between employees and managers
- Consistently walk through the crop to assess plant health pest presence and “real feel” of the climate
- Receive the orders of fertilizers and mix of fertilizers, ensure the proper disposal of containers and keep the Fertilizer Room clean and organized.
- Inspect, clean and/or refill probes, thermostats, heating valves etc.
- Clean and maintain the spays
- Collect information about coming orders of bio controls and/or bees and ensure they are distributed and placed correctly and timely.
- Monitor the effectiveness of the pollination.
- Prepare the mixes for the spray applications.
- Calibrate the sprayers and ensure volumes and doses used are according to Grower’s recommendation.
- Ensure the proper washing and disposal of pesticides containers in compliance with the Pesticide Act Regulations.
- Control of Inventory of Personal Protective Equipment such as spray suits, masks, gloves, etc.
- Control of Inventory of Pesticides, must keep monthly inventory updated.
- Ensure spray applications prescribed by the Grower are done correctly, safely, and timely.
- Keep the record of all the spray applications in the proper forms with all information needed.
- Communicate to the Grower any indications of pests and diseases.
- Remove diseased plants for testing or disposal.
- Support the jobs of cleaning and disinfection of the Greenhouses at the end/beginning of each crop cycle; must learn to operate machinery and know all the procedures in these kinds of jobs.
- Maintain high standards of conduct and professionalism.
- Assistant Grower must be familiar with all the systems and procedures of the Greenhouse to be able to act as an alternative when a Grower, or a Labour Supervisor or a Scout are absent.
