Job Summary

The Director develops policies and procedures for the delivery of the legislated functions of the office, manages the personnel and resources, conducts high profile and sensitive investigations, provides direction and operational support for the more complex and special investigations, reviews inspection reports, and provides day-to-day direction and leadership to the Office. For all matters within the Corrections mandate of the Office, the Director reports the findings to Ministry senior executives as required.
The Director also oversees strategic planning for the Office, as well as the management, coordination, and evaluation of compliance of regulations that have been designated by the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for Treatment of Prisoners in B.C. correctional facilities that result in recommendations to executive and senior leadership on how government organizations can improve organizational performance accountability.
The Director ensures a transparent process by clearly informing those involved about the purpose of the Office's systemic quality reviews and public reporting thereof (engage and explain/assess and ensure understanding by adapting language used to the appropriate level).
The Director investigates and reports on inmate disturbances, escapes of prisoners and inmates, wrongful releases and arrests, and deaths of inmates and prisoners through suicide, natural causes, or drug overdoses.
The position includes frequently dealing with disturbing subject matter such as inmate deaths, suicides, drug overdoses and serious assaults. The director is on-call for notification of significant events in correctional centres such as deaths, disturbances or hostage taking.
Job Requirements:
• University degree in a relevant discipline such as sociology, psychology, law, social work, or criminology, OR
• An equivalent combination of education/formal training, AND
• At least five (5) years' experience in the investigations industry.
• At least five (5) years experience leading and coaching teams of both included and excluded staff.
• At least five (5) years' experience in a senior management role leading and conducting investigations, inspections, audits, program reviews and risk assessments.
• At least five (5) years' experience establishing and maintaining collaborative working relationships, particularly at a senior leadership level.
Preference may be given to applicants with the following experience:
• At least three (3) years' experience with senior leadership and decision making in an investigatory environment.
• Experience working with Corrections, criminal justice and/or investigatory public bodies.
• Experience with alternative dispute resolution and administrative justice processes, including elements of fairness, impartiality and professionalism.
