Loch Island Lodge is seeking a BREAKFAST COOK/HOUSEKEEPER. You do not require previous professional culinary experience, as we can train suitable candidates, but prior education or experience is a definite asset. What does the ideal candidate look like?We keep our guests well-fed with hearty favourites. Our rotating weekly meal schedule includes dishes such as omelettes, eggs Benedict, eggs to order, casseroles, pancakes, French toast, waffles, crepes, hot cereals, and sides of fried potatoes, bacon, sausage, toast, and/or fruit. While some prep can be done the night before, this job requires being in the kitchen by 5:30-6 AM daily and having the food ready at 7 AM. The kitchen should be cleaned by 9 AM, and on most days you will join 2-3 other housekeeping staff for cabin cleaning or laundry tasks until approximately 12 PM. On days when we have no hot breakfast scheduled, you will do housekeeping tasks only. Here are the specific tasks and skills that we require:
- Cook for 2-30+ guests and assorted staff
- Maintain a sanitary and orderly kitchen
- Help dinner cook with inventory and Sysco order
- Clean cabins (make beds, bleach counters/dressers, clean kitchens, do dishes, clean bathrooms, empty garbage cans, sweep and mop floors)
- You may be required to clean outpost cabins that are accessible by boat only
- Do laundry (soaking, washing, and folding bed linens, towels, and kitchen linens)
- General cleaning in the lodge
- Answer the telephone and administer fishing licences
- Follow recipes and do basic calculations to modify recipes
You know who you are as a person, and maintain strong ethics.You are responsible, accountable, and respectful to guests and staff who may not have the same beliefs as you. You have confidence in your abilities and an awareness of your weaknesses. You see the dangers inherent in a remote environment with adverse weather, plenty of machinery, and no emergency services, and behave accordingly. Applicable requirements are:
- You are comfortable speaking, reading, and writing in English
- You have basic computer skills (we will train you to administer fishing licences)
- You can follow a schedule or create your own schedule
- You will wear a staff T-shirt on shift (provided for free) and follow a dress code
You’re knowledgeable of the unique difficulties in this line of work and will show up prepared for the first day with the necessary certifications and gear. While we provide room and board, you must already own, or be able to purchase, basic outdoors gear for a northern environment. If you need to outfit yourself for this job, you must be willing to spend $100-$300+ on your gear before the season begins. Specific evidence of preparation includes:
- Culinary training or work experience an asset
- WHMIS, First Aid, food handling certificates an asset
- Knowledge of Sysco product range and ordering process an asset
- Must complete the course at your own expense before the season starts. You cannot work without it!
- Willingness to operate an 18’ cedar strip boat with a 15 hp outboard by yourself (will train)
- Ability to lift 40 lbs. safely
You may or may not have experience in the field, but you know what skills you do have and how you could use them at the lodge. While we’re open to hiring people from all paths of life, those who can demonstrate that they understand the challenges of living in a remote environment have the best chance at succeeding. Working at a lodge is a great “first real job” that will instil discipline and lifelong skills. - Salary is $2800 per month with FREE room and board (includes amenities such as bedding, satellite TV, limited Internet, live bait, laundry, use of boats and facilities)
- Work is 6 days per week, generally 6 hours per day (the schedule is dynamic and may require only a few hours of work on certain days, or 8 hours on another; manager determines what day is free)
- Cooks are included in the tip pool! Tips average $2500-$3500+ per season (CAD/USD mix) depending on quality of service
- Must be eligible to work in Canada
