Murray McKinnon Foundation, Classroom Worker – Contract

Community Based Programs, Ajax Learning Center

Murray McKinnon Foundation (MMF) is seeking a Classroom Youth Worker who will be providing active engagement and assistance to youth at the Ajax Learning Center; ensuring they are receiving relational care, adequate supervision in a small alternative classroom setting. This is a Contract, beginning as soon as possible until June 28th, 2024 and is in keeping with the Durham Board of Education school calendar. General hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Successful Candidates will be expected to:

  • Promote and engage with the Agency’s Mission, Vision and Value Statements as well as its Strategic Plan
  • Foster and be responsible for the relational care of the young people in the classroom
  • Provide and actively engage in an inclusive, anti-oppressive and anti-racist environment that promotes ‘felt’ safety to the young people we serve
  • Conduct on-going observations, reporting and documentation of the young person’s well-being while responding to behaviors using a trauma-informed and healing centered lens
  • Employ supportive and motivational counselling skills and as required, crisis intervention techniques
  • Strive to meet the physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual and cultural needs of each young person
  • Utilize evidence informed proactive measures, programming and intervention practices grounded in harm-reduction principles that are culturally appropriate to each young person
  • Actively assist the young person in establishing educational goals, connecting and participating in pro-social activities
  • Identifying and communicating systemic barriers on young person and assist in advocating for their mediation and or elimination, and above all;
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team professionals, which include Program Coordinator, teachers, Attendance Counsellors, Outreach Workers, Case Managers, all to the aim of ensuring best care practices are provided to the young person

The Successful Candidate must have:

  • Completed a Bachelor of Child and Youth Care is preferred; or a minimum level of education required in a 2-year diploma in a related field (social services diploma, mental health & addictions, police foundations as examples)
  • Minimum three (3) years related work experience
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record and a reliable vehicle
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills
  • A creative approach to working with young persons
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the teacher, community partners, families and team members
  • Provide proof of Immunization records, must have physician’s note (fitness to work)
  • Provide a current Criminal Reference check, including Vulnerable sector screening
  • Have proof of post-secondary education

Preferred Experiences and Skills:

Knowledge of legislation related to Youth Justice

  • Displayed competencies of self-care practices, personal/professional boundaries & commitment to growth of interpersonal skills
  • Sound understanding and ability to apply some of the following counselling approaches: strength based relational, cognitive-behavioral, Mindfulness
  • Demonstrated ability to work with neurodiverse persons, have a creative approach, people skills, cultural competency and be open to working within an Alternative Education setting.

The Successful Candidate may have these additional assets:

Specialized training on the topic of Mental Health,

  • Indigenous Perspectives and Designations
  • Fluency in languages other than English
  • Certifications such as ASIST, First Aid/CPR-C, and UMAB
  • Previous work experience in child welfare, youth justice, education, out of home care, and/or community supports.
