Positive Living Niagara operates the StreetWorks harm reduction which provides supervised consumption services, needle exchange, Naloxone distribution, support and education aimed at reducing the transmission of HIV, Hep C, other blood-borne infections and other health related risks among people who use drugs.
The Community Engagement and Security Worker will provide support to program staff to managing flow of clients in and provide security functions around the Consumption and Treatment Services Site, and liase with neighbouring stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
- Adhere to all current agency policies
- Represent the agency’s service philosophy and beliefs
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Directors or delegate
- To promote teamwork both within Positive Living Niagara
- Commitment to scheduled hours or work and follow through on assignments
- Participate in training and educational activities as assigned
Duties:
- Assist in managing client activities in and around the CTS site
- Work in collaboration with neighbouring stakeholders to find creative solutions to issues that may arise
- Deescalate challenging client behaviours and ensure the property and staff are kept safe
- Treat clients with respect and develop rapport with them to facilitate cooperation when enforcing the code of conduct at the site
- Conduct regualr perimeter checks and block walks to engage people in safer use practices and encourage them to use the comsumption site
- Complete required Ministry reporting
- Connect with law enforcement as directed by management in challenging situations
- Apprise management of any suspected illegal activities in and around the site.
- Assist staff in addressing clients and others as necessary when there is a perceived personal risk.
- Assist in the removal of disruptive clients from the site.
Qualifications:
- Training and experience in security
- Ability to work within a harm reduction program and accept harm reduction principles when engaged with program participants meeting individuals “where they are at”.
- Experience in supporting individuals who use substances
Required Skills:
- Crisis prevention training
- Mental health first aid training or experience
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of clients
- Experience with providing security services
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- French language skills an asset
