Title: Crisis and Addictions Outreach Worker

Reports to: NNADAP Coordinator
Terms: Yearly Contract (Subject to Renewal)
Hours: Up to 35 hrs per week

Salary: $25.00/hour
Location: Wellness Centre

Job Summary:

The Crisis and Addictions Outreach Worker is a funded position to assist our community members and clients with Harm Reduction Outreach services and works with the RAAM team to deliver services related to addictions. The Outreach Worker works with community members, known and suspected addicted persons, and street-involved people and is responsible for initiating contact, developing rapport, providing support, prevention education, advocacy, case management, and referral. Services are provided through street walks, mobile van outreach, and at fixed sites and where people live.

Specific duties and responsibilities will also include, but are not limited to the following and may be subject to change:

Responsibilities

  • Provide Harm Reduction Outreach Services to community members, including distribution of injection equipment
  • Work collaboratively with the Outreach Workers.
  • Train and provide naloxone kits to community members
  • Provide educational materials on harm reduction, HIV/AIDS, Hep C, etc.
  • Provide support for people who use drugs with regards to health promotion, and community resources/referrals,
  • Order, stock and maintain needle exchange and other instruments
  • Make referrals to other services including withdrawal management, residential retreatment and counselling
  • Build working relationships with NNADAP, Building Healthy Communities, and Community Health Representative
  • Develop and deliver prevention and harm reduction presentations/messages to target populations in a variety of venues, including parks, bars, community agencies, and online
  • Involve community partner agencies, health care providers, and stakeholders in the planning and delivery of educational material
  • Record and monitor statistical information to identify current issues and client needs
  • Liaise with managers of outreach venues to identify outreach spaces
  • Organize various meetings/workshops to educate community on the opioid/naloxone program
  • Provide clean equipment to substance users including safe injection and safe inhaling equipment
  • Contribute to a more coordinated opioid response
  • Reduce the transmission of blood borne illnesses
  • Develop partnership with Regional HIV/AIDS Connection
  • Maintain data for reporting deliverables
  • Establish an inventory safe injection and safe inhaling equipment and educate on safe use and practices
  • Report on activities of the program to the funder
  • To recruit, orient, train, and monitor peer ambassadors (people who have lived experience with drug use)
  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Social Worker or related field or equivalent counselling/case management experience
  • Experience working in social services or related field with Indigenous people, organizations, and communities
  • Demonstrated understanding and working knowledge of addictions, sexuality and harm reduction principles and the ability to understand and practice harm reduction principles as they relate to substance use and sexual activity
  • Knowledge and understanding of cultural sensitivity
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, to anticipate potential problems/conflicts and take appropriate actions, and to meet deadlines.
  • Willing to work flexible hours
  • Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential subject matter
  • Excellent computer skills for reporting and presentation purposes, and general office equipment knowledge
  • Must have a valid Class ‘G’ driver’s license with $2M liability insurance with reliable method of transportation (organization fleet to be used; however may not always be available)
  • Current Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Search required (if offered position)
  • Exhibits strong written, verbal, and evaluation skills
  • Current First Aid/CPR with AED certification (or willingness to obtain)
