Data Center Operations, Director of Data Center Projects

Job Summary

Plans and directs day-to-day operations and strategic direction of a team of electrical and mechanical engineers who design solutions and complete expansion, sustainability, and other projects within Data Centers, with oversight of over $60m+ of project work annually. Establishes and maintains relationships internally, with vendors, and general contractors.

Anticipates high-impact issues and leads mitigation strategy development. Collaborates with global leaders to develop and implement operational strategy and systems roadmap and forecasts global operational training needs and documentation strategy.

This is a critical position for the Americas Data Center Operations organization.

Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Leads, manages, recruits, and develops staff across multiple locations.
  • Provides strategic guidance and direction to drive team results following the Transformational Leadership behaviors.
  • Set the vision, establish direction, communicate with the team, and ensure alignment.
  • Provide training and onboarding of new team members.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring.
  • Build and motivate a successful team that delivers results and continuously seeks to improve performance.
  • Live the culture of Equinix and set the example for the team.

Communications

  • Global Operations internal and external communications. Ensure relevant collaborators are coordinated with and kept informed of the progress and status of initiatives.
  • Create sound, data-driven presentations tailored to the audience and present to executive levels of leadership.
  • Cascade key business information to the team.

Training

  • Forecasts, establishes plans, and secures resources for deploying training for global operational training needs.

Process Development/Management

  • Collaborates on the development of operational strategy with other global, cross-functional leaders with vision, and leads implementation of strategy within the department.

Budgeting/Financial Management

  • Sets and handles multi-million-dollar budget for team.

Project/Program Leadership

  • Leads broad-scale regional or global projects that have an impact on the business, working with cross-functional teams, including business partners (Sales, Commercial Finance, IT, P&L) and general contractors (e.g., looking at bigger bids, projects with higher transparency, greater spending).
  • Build strong partnerships and relationships, collaborating with key partners across the business and in the Data Centers to identify and implement the best solutions
  • Responsible for prioritizing, planning, tracking, managing, and measuring project portfolio of work by industry standards.
  • Communicate status to key collaborators and executive leadership.

Operations Strategy

  • Assesses the company's strategic direction for operational impact.

Job Description:

Project Initiation

  • Identify projects to increase capacity and improve sustainability.
  • Collaborate with Commercial Finance on determination of project IRR (internal rate of return)
  • Prioritize the portfolio of improvement initiatives and identify which projects will be implemented.
  • Establish and develop project scope and initial capital estimates and schedules.
  • Establish a project team by collaborating with Data Center site teams and short-listing suitably experienced project teams.
  • Arrange appointment of contractors, liaising for approvals and terms of engagement.

Design

  • Initiate and lead the design process, driving timely design development to meet schedule.
  • Resolve design issues and ensure timely resolution of internal information requests and design decisions.
  • Lead project design development and scope, adhering to approved capital funding. Track changes and obtain approvals for deviation from the approved scope.
  • Lead communication of project progress, coordinate dissemination of design information, and produce regular reporting as the need arises. Chair project meetings.
  • Identify the best procurement approach for the project.

Delivery

  • Generate required approvals to order equipment and engage contractors, coordinating with internal teams.
  • Lead project team to ensure delivery of the project to the required quality within the approved budget and to schedule.
  • Own scope and change processes during project delivery. Liaise with the project team and internal collaborators to resolve project issues.
  • Track project progress, and report cost, schedule, and scope issues.

Departmental Objectives

  • Support the broader departmental objectives to ensure the continued development of additional Data Center capacity throughout the Americas region.
  • Provide support to other regional projects, and travel within the region as the need arises.

Requirements

  • Educated to degree level in engineering or construction, or with equivalent work.
  • experience
  • 10-15 years’ experience in large construction projects with significant building services
  • component.
  • Confirmed ability to work with and influence all levels in the organization.
  • Deliver on time and on schedule
