Job description

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:
• Independently conduct complex inspections, assess compliance, prepare and review technical reports across a wide variety of media/sector-based program areas.
• Respond to environmental events, conduct follow-up to achieve compliance, including monitoring and reporting on potential impacts to the environment.
• Identify, analyze and evaluate complex environmental problems and solutions where causes may not be immediately obvious.
• Provide technical expertise and advice on environmental legislation requirements
• Recommend remedial and/or legal action and ensure implementation of compliance programs
• Testify in legal proceedings; prepare and issue Provincial Officer's Orders
• Maintain effective liaison with stakeholders, the general public and clients
• Participate in the Environmental Response Program outside of regular business hours.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G driver's licence or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• The position requires ability to complete and maintain designation as a Provincial Officer.
• (For bilingual positions only) You must possess oral French language skills at the advanced level. Your proficiency level will be confirmed before hire.

Specialized Knowledge and Experience:

- Environmental legislation, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines and quality standards to assess regulatory compliance; to interpret intent of legislation, apply legal precedents and codes and to develop, negotiate and implement compliance actions
- Environmental sciences, technology and protection including:
- Pollution sources and controls for stationary and mobile sources
- Spills contamination impacts and clean-up responsibilities
- Water treatment processes (drinking water and wastewater)
- Actions required to address adverse water quality incidents
- Sample collection and field measurement equipment and techniques
- Indicators of impacts to human health, flora/fauna and the natural environment

Conflict Management:

• You can identify and take necessary, appropriate and timely action in response to complex and/or critical issues.
• You have the ability to identify potential conflicts, facilitate open and constructive dialogue, and proactively address and help defuse potential conflicts.

Judgement and Decision Making:

• You have judgement to evaluate and consider situational factors to make independent, timely decisions that align with policies, procedures and legislation.
• You have proven problem solving skills to identify underlying issues, link issues with regulatory requirements and recommend appropriate corrective measures to address challenging situations

Collaboration:

• You have experience developing and maintaining relationships, responding appropriately and providing guidance to diverse internal and external clients in a professional manner.
• You have oral communication and active listening skills to explain complex policies, procedures and techniques, and to help ensure information is understood.
• You have written communication skills to accurately document information and prepare reports.
• You use computer software applications (such as for Word Processing, spread sheets, database and Network applications) to prepare letters, tables, and reports, use electronic mail, and enter data or access information.

Influence and Enforcement:

• You can influence and persuade others to adopt a specific course of action.
• You have experience identifying situations of non-compliance and assessing the associated level of risk to determine appropriate corrective actions to achieve environmental and human health outcomes.
• You can accurately interpret, apply and enforce policies, procedures and legislation and relay compliance-related information to others.

Integrity:

• You have integrity to ensure your actions are consistent with organizational values, policies and codes of conduct
• You are able to monitor and evaluate work quality and processes against policies, standards and regulations

Self Awareness and Stress Management:

• You have demonstrated field experience and ability to work independently, and under pressure to meet conflicting and changing deadlines.
• You have the ability to recognize current and potential stressors to oneself and apply healthy tools, strategies, or techniques to effectively reduce the impact of stress on oneself and one's work.
• You can remain objective and aware of how one's behaviour impacts others, adjusting to the situation as necessary.
