As the Environmental Specialist, Landfill Gas Management, you will conduct work related to management of Landfill Gas at active Waste Management Facilities (WMF) and closed City of Calgary-owned landfill sites. Primary duties include: 

  • Assist, support, and manage the daily operations of Landfill Gas (LFG) Management Systems (MS). 
  • Manage and oversee the performance of the LFG extraction fields at active WMF and closed landfill sites. 
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot LFG extraction equipment/infrastructure and processing issues, including responding to emergency and process alarms. 
  • Obtain and verify the accuracy of data, from both automated and manual collection processes, to be used for the monthly and annual operations reports for the LFG MS. 
  • Analyze facility performance and monitoring data to help optimize LFG MS operational performance and prepare or assist in the production of LFG MS monthly and annual reports. 
  • Work with consultants and the LFG management team on LFG MS management strategies, system maintenance (routine and capital), and improvements.
  • Assist with review and modification of proposed annual maintenance work plans for LFG MS facilities.
  • Assistand manage contractors to perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs of the LFG MS. 
  • Assist with preparation of annual LFG management compliance reports to be submitted to regulatory agencies. 
  • Develop, modify, and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to LFG MS operations, monitoring, and maintenance. 
  • Assist in modifications/updates of Health and Safety Plans (HASP) for each LFG facility as required. 
  • Assist in the preparation and review of Request for Proposals related to LFG projects. 
  • Implement environmental compliance monitoring and sampling programs related to soil vapour and LFG, and other environmental monitoring and sampling required by the Business Unit. 
  • Liaise with public and landfill operations and other Business Units regarding LFG related issues. 
  • Input major activities completed into the Asset Management software. 
 
Qualifications 
  • A degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Technology, or Environmental Science and at least 5 years of relevant work experience; OR 
  • A completed 2-year diploma in a field listed above and at least 8 years of relevant work experience. 
  • Experience with operation and/or monitoring of remediation systems related to Soil Vapour Extraction (SVE) or LFG extraction and treatment, environmental monitoring, data interpretation, contract management, and contractor supervision is required. 
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required.
  • Experience with operations and safety practices on LFG or SVE MS, as well as experience with safety practices related to contractor management, would be significant assets. 
  • Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word will be considered an asset. 
  • The successful applicant will possess advanced problem solving and trouble shooting skills, strong accuracy and attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to learn complex tasks quickly, safely, and competently. 
Working Conditions: This position involves a mix of office and field work, including working outdoors on uneven terrain.

work week, with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle. 
Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
