As an Environmental Specialist in Water Services, you will be part of a small Environmental Compliance Team responsible for the preparation, implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of environmental programs and services for the Water Utility. Primary duties include:
- Develop, maintain and support the implementation of the ISO 14001 registered Environmental Management System (EMS; EnviroSystem) and Drinking Water Safety Plan.
- Provide project management and subject matter expertise for environmental projects.
- Act as an in-house environmental consultant and advisor, providing regulatory support and direction to operating areas within the Water Utility to ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and municipal regulatory requirements.
- Conduct environmental compliance inspections and/or participate in environmental audits at plants and construction sites.
- Develop and conduct environmental awareness training sessions for operational areas.
- Ensure environmental documentation is in place, up-to-date and consistent with corporate and business unit requirements.
- Ensure internal and external environmental reporting requirements are met (for example: substance release reporting, environmental performance dashboards).
- Act as a conduit for environmental matters between the Water Utility and other City business units, through participation in committees, work groups and communities of practice.
Qualifications
- A degree in Environmental Sciences or other related discipline and at least 5 years of related experience.
- Knowledge of environmental legislation and regulations pertaining to water-related operations is essential.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending OR; a valid Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- Previous working knowledge with Environmental Management Systems and Drinking Water Safety Plans would be considered an asset.
- Previous working experience in a municipal or private water utility would be considered an asset.
- Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams). Proficiency in SharePoint and Power BI would be an asset.
- Successful performance in this position requires an individual who is enthusiastic, adaptive and self-motivated, who has demonstrated they can work well in a team but also independently, and they must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
Working Conditions: The position is primarily office-based. However, site visits to plants or construction sites will also be required, which may involve outdoor work and exposure to workplace hazards.
