Job description

arc programs is currently accepting applications for Family Support Counsellors to join the
Family Connection Centre team.

Family Support Counsellors will provide coaching and mentorship to families and caregivers of children and youth with support needs, to develop the resiliency and capacity of the caregivers to manage their child / youth’s needs and behaviours, and their ability to provide effective care on an ongoing basis.

Hours / Schedule >

Full-Time, Permanent
Averaging 37.5-hours per-week

Responsibilities >

The primary responsibilities of this position include:

  • Providing parent / caregiver coaching, education and support based on their identified needs and priorites.
  • Improving parent and child / youth or sibling interactions and decreasing conflict.
  • Facilitating support groups for parents / caregivers to enhance connections, provide education and promote skill development relevant to the developmental and chronological age of their children.
  • Working with parents / caregivers to identify natural supports, improve health and general functioning, and to overcome concerns contributing to distress.
  • Facilitating Family Connections with relevant community services, and overcoming barriers to accessing supports.
  • Collaborating with Developmental Generalists, Behavioural Consutants, Keyworkers and other partners to provide comprehensive, goal-focused services relevant to the identied needs of each family.
  • Implemenenting and maintaining required case management and clinical records.

Qualifications >

  • A BSW or a bachelor’s degree in a Social Services or Human Services discipline (BSW,

CYC, BA in Psychology etc.) is preferred.

  • Candidates with a Diploma in a Social Services or Human Services discipline (i.e.:

Human Service Worker) with a minimum of 2-years relevant experience will be considered.

Candidates must possess a valid Driver's License, and a sound personal vehicle to provide outreach support, and transportation for families when required.

Successful applicants will be subject to a screening process, including a criminal record search, to confirm suitability for the position.

Other Skills and Attributes:

  • Knowledge and demonstrated understanding of strengths-based family systems and attachment-based support.
  • Experience with FASD, Autism, neurocognitive developmental disabilities, other complex developmental behavioural conditions, and child development.
  • Working knowledge of the CPS (Collaborative Initiative-taking Solutions) model.
  • Ability to establish trusting relationships with children, youth, and families.
  • Experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Group facilitation skills.

Wage / Benefits >

$4,671.88 - $4,915.63 per month, based on relevant experience and education.

Upon successful completion of a probationary period, full-time employees (minimum 20- hrs per week) are eligible for a full benefit package (including dental plan, vision coverage, life insurance, extended medical coverage, long-term disability plan, and RRSP contributions).

New full-time employees are eligible for 3-weeks paid vacation to start, as well as paid sick days as described in agency policy.
