Position Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented individual (or couple) to join our team as a Grounds Maintenance Specialist at Naramata Centre. This is a full-time position, and we are open to the possibility of a job-share arrangement for a couple wishing to split responsibilities 50/50. The Grounds Maintenance Specialist will play a crucial role in maintaining our facilities and outdoor spaces, contributing to the overall well-being of our community.

Key Responsibilities:

Buildings:

  • Perform general maintenance of all Centre buildings, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Collaborate in the maintenance of facilities, equipment, and buildings, including boilers, furnaces, septic systems, and water systems.
  • Oversee the care of outside areas related to buildings, such as roofs, eavestroughs, paths, and cement pads.
  • Assist in winterizing and opening buildings, conducting regular security checks, and providing access to short-term rentals.
  • Assess and make minor repairs to various machinery and equipment.
  • Conduct minor electrical and plumbing repairs at rented accommodations.
  • Assist the Project and Facilities Manager to coordinate tradespeople for tasks beyond department capabilities.

Grounds:

  • Maintain the Centre's grounds, including lawns, trees, gardens, campgrounds, and playground equipment.
  • Develop and implement an annual cyclical maintenance program for grounds;
  • Service and maintain ground equipment, including mowers, power tools, and hand tools.
  • Install and maintain irrigation systems.
  • Ensure proper care of outside furniture and playground equipment.
  • Conduct lawn maintenance, minor tree and shrub pruning, and debris removal.

Emergency Response:

  • Respond to emergency situations during and after hours to address immediate safety concerns.

Collaboration and Teamwork:

  • Work with volunteers to enhance the upkeep of buildings and grounds.
  • Maintain detailed records of completed work.

General Duties:

  • Address maintenance requests identified by other staff.
  • Operate department vehicles, mowers, and power tools.
  • Manage the movement, replacement, or repair of furniture and appliances in all areas of the Centre facility.
  • Perform janitorial duties in shared building spaces as needed.
  • Engage in seasonal housekeeping tasks as required.
  • Undertake additional tasks contributing to the care and protection of buildings and grounds as directed by the Facilities Manager.

Term of Employment:

The position will commence on March 1, 2024, and is expected to conclude in November 2024 based on the operational needs of the Centre. Employment will be renewed for the following year, subject to performance evaluation and operational requirements.

Communication, Documentation, Meetings, and Training:

  • Be available on digital platforms (we use Slack) for coordinating maintenance requests.
  • Document all maintenance activities in accordance with Centre procedures.
  • Attend regular staff and departmental meetings.
  • Participate in Site and Maintenance meetings.
  • Attend Centre-provided or mandated training and development sessions.

Qualifications:

  • Relevant experience in Grounds Maintenance and building operations, coupled with a passion for creating vibrant and welcoming environments.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, and carpentry repairs, with a flair for creative problem-solving.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, complemented by a positive and collaborative attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team, infusing a sense of humor and enthusiasm into daily tasks.
  • Flexibility to respond to emergency situations outside regular hours, showcasing a calm and adaptable demeanor.
