Are you interested in a new and challenging opportunity? We are looking for a Library Assistant IV to contribute to the daily operations of the Library Services! Does the idea of being a resources person and coach for other Library Assistants appeal to you? Than this may be the role for you!
What you will be doing!
  • Functioning as a resources person and a coach for other Library Assistants in certain technical fields, and leading or coordinating operational activities and special projects to support the operations of the Chalk River Library.
  • Conducting annual journal surveys at all sites to determine the subscription lists for all site libraries for each new calendar year.
  • Managing CNL subscriptions and site licenses for electronic products by interacting with suppliers to set up subscriptions, keeping current of account balances with suppliers, identifying supplier mistakes to prevent CNL from overpaying, resolving cost/invoicing issues, working with CNL Accounts Payable closely to ensure access to e-products or periodicals will not be interrupted due to payment delays;
  • Clarifying contract terms in licensing agreements and following process for Legal review.
  • Performing various tasks as required, and coordinating effort of the Library Assistants to ensure all areas in library operations are well maintained and services provided.
  • Assisting the Section Head by providing detailed financial information, compiling monthly statistics, preparing fund allocation spreadsheets for cost recovery, compiling work procedures manual, and coordinating work schedules.
  • Functions as the CR Library contact for three tasks: 1) compiling updates on given subject areas; 2) searching of business databases; and 3) verifying bibliographic citations for Chalk River/Whiteshell Employees, before they publish or present papers externally, to ensure accuracy and exclusion of CNL proprietary information in the citations as specified in Procedure
  • Coordinating effort to input Canadian nuclear literature into the International Nuclear Information System (INIS) to ensure the CR Library meets its obligations as the INIS Centre for Canada, a role designated by the Government of Canada.
  • Providing training/coaching for other Library Assistants in input format, performing QA checks on input records, interacting with indexing specialists and international personnel to ensure compliance with all set requirements. Also identify relevant Canadian literature for input.
  • Functioning as the initial contact at the Reference Desk, searches and provides answers to complex technical and business inquiries, and manages the circulation functions in the automated library system to provide internal and external customers with accurate access to information, resources and materials.
  • Performing database searching, covering both technical and business databases to identify and retrieve literature for CNL employees.
  • Developing and delivering formal and informal training to CNL customers in the use of end-user tools, such as networked databases, the online library catalogue, the Internet, and other reference material to enable easy access to information at the customer’s convenience.
  • Communicating Library Services through various promotional activities, such as contacting new employees, distributing promotional materials, annual library survey of subscriptions, setting up 60 day trials to resources, doing presentations and engaging in other publicity activities to promote and advertise library services.
What we are looking for:
  • A Library Technician diploma from an accredited Library and Information Technology program or equivalent experience and training with 5-7 years’ experience as a Library Technician.
  • A good understanding of the concepts regarding three keys aspects of library operations: Public Services, Technical Services and Reference Services.
  • Leadership, coaching and coordination skills to provide guidance to others.
  • Expertise in retrieving literature in various languages and from various sources; verification of bibliographic citations for publications authored by CR/WL employees; business database searching; and compiling information updates.
  • Organizational skills, aptitude for detailed work and high accuracy in its performance. Ability to manage time and prioritize workload as appropriate.
  • Communication skills and good interpersonal abilities. Tact and diplomacy in dealing with clients, customerfocused and services-oriented.
  • Must be aware of CNL’s business objectives and be adaptable to changes in the company or operational environment.
  • Familiarity with business, scientific and technical terminology used with CNL.
  • Ability to conduct reference interviews to determine the specific nature, scopy, and depth of each request. As well as determine the time and cost element, and preferred method of delivering and receiving information.
  • Expertise in database searching including search strategy development using Boolean logic and command language.
  • Ability to answer general and in-depth information requests, using both online and print reference tools, as well as utilizing the resources and knowledge from a network of professional contacts with the Library industry.
  • Expertise with computing technology, database searching and the Internet is required.
  • Knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system, subject headings, standard library terminology and filing rules in order to access, retrieve and shelve/file library materials.
  • Knowledge base of the principles of cataloguing and extensive knowledge of CNL’s collection to catalogue new resources and make recommendations on weeding. Have the ability to perform subject analysis of materials and assign call numbers.
  • Knowledge of Web Page editing.
  • Ability to adapt to new technology, including learning to use new tools and electronic library resources.
  • High motivation and self-direction, and the ability to work independently as well as with a team.
Security clearance eligibility required: Level 2 Secret which has a minimum requirement of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security”.

Location of Work - Hybrid
  • This role is based out of CNL’s Chalk River site, however, subject to the terms of this agreement, the primary work location will be remote. The role will require some regular and frequent attendance at the Chalk River site. The schedule and frequency will be determined by discussions with the manager as well as internal client and project needs. CNL may require travel from time to time, as necessary.
