Responsibilities
The Library Assistant (User Services) is primarily accountable for providing high-level operational support to the User Services Managers in the delivery and development of a suite of user services including Information/Public Service, Document Delivery, Collections Maintenance, and Outreach and Events. The Library Assistant collaborates with their Library Assistant peers to coordinate scheduling for Information/Public Service delivery and oversees the work of on-site Library Assistants, Student Library Assistants and Work Study Students engaged in the provision of user services. The Library Assistant also works with the User Services Manager/Library Director and their Library Assistant peers to coordinate the assessment, development, and implementation of services for one or more of the service groups including Information/Public Service, Document Delivery, Collections Maintenance and/or Outreach and Events. The Library Assistant participates in the delivery of Information/Public service and may receive on-site supervision from a User Services Manager or Library Director, depending on the location of service delivery.
Qualifications
Education:
- 3 year university bachelor’s degree
Experience:
- More than 4 years and up to and including 6 years’ experience working in an academic library setting providing staff scheduling and oversight
- Experience providing customer service, issue resolution and cash handling and reconciliation
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of catalogue standards for bibliographic and item records for serials and monographs including familiarity with Library of Congress classification system
- Ability to use and demonstrate a variety of library materials
- Knowledge of collections maintenance and space planning procedures as they relate to moving/shifting of library collections
- Strong customer service orientation in supporting diverse users, with the ability to identify and understand customer needs, library resources, and university services and to provide appropriate solutions to meet these needs
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
- Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, and other members of the University community
- Ability to provide training and guidance to employees to meet high performance standards, while working effectively as a member of the team
- Strong cognitive skills including problem analysis, decision-making, financial and quantitative analysis
- Strong record of teamwork with the motivation and ability to work independently with little supervision
- Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and accomplish a variety of tasks in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Demonstrated problem solving, analytical and trouble-shooting skills
- Strong fine motor skills to handle a variety of library materials
- Intermediate computer skills using a variety of software, including Internet browsers, Microsoft Office Suite, content management software, and an integrated library services platform
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule (evening and weekend hours) to accommodate Western Libraries’ events and activities
- For staff assigned to the Music Library: the ability to read music, understanding of musical terminology in common European languages, familiarity with instruments and ensembles in both classical and popular tradition, understanding of performance conventions, and a basic understanding of musical eras and styles
- Familiarity with Western policies and guidelines preferred
