Reporting to the Director, Policy, Planning, and Legislation, the Manager, Communications Education and Outreach (Manager) oversees the effective strategic planning and delivery for all communications, public education, engagement and Outreach programs, initiatives and products for all divisions within the Department of Environment (ENV). The incumbent supports Senior Managers and departmental staff to ensure that the department’s communications are managed strategically, ensuring that messages are presented consistently and professionally. Integral to the position is the ability to effectively convey information and communications messages to external target audiences and to facilitate public involvement, consultation and engagement in departmental decision-making.

The Manager will be responsible for ensuring that all media and educational materials are designed, developed and edited appropriately to convey key messages integral to the Department’s mandate. This position will Coordinate translations for all program divisions and participate as a member of the Government of Nunavut (GN) communications committee, which vets all GN communications materials. The Manager reviews, monitors and evaluates departmental communications to ensure consistency with wider GN and departmental policies, standards and objectives. The incumbent will liaise with local and national media, providing media relations advice to departmental spokespersons, as well as developing standards for all communications, public relations and public information products produced by the department. The Manager is responsible for ensuring that all departmental website content is appropriate and kept up to date.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized

Bachelor’s degree in a related field, combined with three (3) years of experience in communications planning. Experience in a northern environment is an asset. In addition, at least one (1) year of supervisory experience is required, preferably supervising teams of staff. Experience in the development and delivery of environment-related educational programs to diverse audiences is required. This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in Inuktitut would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
