Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey’s Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The Opportunity

Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.

We are currently seeking a Manager, Voisey’s Bay Minesto join our Operations department in Voisey’s Bay, NL. This is a permanent position.

This position is based at the Voisey’s Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a one week on, one week off rotation.

The Manager, Voisey’s Bay Mines works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders including the Mines Technical Services department, Health and Safety department, the Project Management Group, Human Resources, Purchasing, and Financial groups to ensure that the business plan is profitable and deliverable. The incumbent manages a mix of processes, technology, funds, and people to balance 1-year results requirements with 1 to 5 year improvement milestones. The Manager, Voisey’s Bay Mines must manage the boundaries between functions within several underground and open pit mines so that work, information, ideas, and technology flow freely among the departments while maximizing output.

Additionally, in this position, you will:

• Ensure mining operations are conducted in compliance with all company/legislated safety and environmental requirements.
• Meet or exceed safety and production goals whilst integrating two underground and two open pit mines with multiple ore bodies, including managing a large operating and capital expenditure budget.
• Analyze trends in safety, environment, production and quality performance, as well as the consumption of resources, and implement actions to address negative variances, or to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.
• Hold direct reports accountable to monitor key performance indicators (Safety, Production, Cost, Environment). Ensure direct reports respond to unplanned deviations with root cause analysis and subsequent action plans.
• Ensure operating strategies, practices and procedures are optimally designed and executed with precision to achieve the operation’s safety, environmental, production and cost commitments.
• Monitor production performance and maintenance assets integrity to ensure that processes are in place both to maintain plant and equipment to sustain/build productive capability, and to meet the targets outlined in the Business Plan.
• Ensure achievement of total product cost / unit cost commitments.
• Collaborate with other Functional Managers (including Central Services, Mine Technical Services, Engineering, Maintenance, Reliability, Safety, Environmental, Human Resources, Finance and Digital Transformation to ensure optimal operation of the Voisey’s Bay Mines within the North Atlantic Base Metals organization is achieved.
• Monitor and coach the Voisey’s Bay team (leadership, staff and production) to optimize employee performance and provide input into development of human resources strategy.
• Develop and promote strategies to manage/promote change to continuously improve / transform the business as required.
• Promote the overall engagement of the workforce to improve the business.
• Monitor and prioritize Capital expenditures, including underground and surface infrastructure, to ensure optimal usage of funds.
• Stakeholder management with individuals/groups internal and external to the company (i.e. Aboriginal Governments, Local communities, Unions).

About You

Education:

• Undergraduate Degree in Engineering (Mining or a relevant discipline).
• Professional Engineer Designation (P.Eng.) is an asset.

Experience:

• 15+ years of relevant experience in the mining industry, combined with 10 years’ experience in a senior leadership role.

Skills:

• Operational Management expertise as senior leader in complex underground mining operations.
• Understanding of Contract Management and Labor Relations.
• Understanding of Maintenance/Planning and Scheduling/Project Planning and Execution.
• Exceptional emotional intelligence and empathy.
