GUIDE | SUPPORT | NAVIGATE | COMMUNICATE | MAKE A DIFFERENCE

About us:

West Coast Kids Cancer Foundation (WCK) provides timely, practical support to respond to the needs of B.C. kids and their families, easing their way as they navigate childhood cancer and blood disorders. Our families need food, connection, resources, and Mental Health support while navigating childhood cancer and blood disorders. The WCK community comes together to provide support that truly makes a difference and helps families to know they are cared for and heard.

About you:

You understand that a childhood cancer diagnosis impacts the wellness of the whole family. Getting to be a part of the solution is the work you were meant to do. You thrive in the role of detective, uncovering & mapping all available resources that meet the unique needs of the families we walk alongside. By identifying the existing gaps in support, you will be excited to develop new programs that start to fill those gaps. You are equally at ease talking with caregivers, healthcare professionals and nonprofit organizations. You thrive in a role that balances your ability to organize and navigate lots of information with the opportunity to creatively innovate new support programs.

About this role:

For the last two years, WCK has researched, consulted, and explored what Mental Health support could look like for families navigating childhood cancer. The path has been anything but straight. We now understand where WCK can start to infuse support in this complex area. The person in this role will establish and solidify support programs, engage closely with other nonprofits, and continue to consult families and those with lived experience to make an impact on those we walk alongside. Reporting to Shannon Hartwig, Executive Director, you will work within a hybrid model (in the Burnaby office and from home) and join the other passionate and dedicated members of the WCK team to challenge the status quo of support available for families navigating childhood cancer in our province.

As a valued member of our team, you will:

  • Consult with families to further understand barriers to accessing Mental Health services for all members of the family.
  • Map out existing resources families can access and tap into.
  • Guide and direct families toward existing resources.
  • Support families through conversation, connection of resources, and completing forms to access funding and resources.
  • Create and update a referral list of therapists.
  • Maintain relationships with therapists to ensure information is accurate and relevant.
  • Liaise with partner organizations and work collaboratively to support families.
  • Develop WCK peer support programs for parents and caregivers.
  • Recruit, onboard, and train peer support volunteers.
  • Oversee and manage peer support volunteers.
  • Organize guest speakers for educational parent sessions.
  • Explore other Mental Health Resources and opportunities to support families.

What you bring to the role:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field such as psychology, health care, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are essential.
  • An understanding or lived experience of childhood cancer/blood disorder is an asset.
  • Willingness to try new things and innovate to make the greatest impact on families.
  • Experience dealing with sensitive situations with compassion and diplomacy.
  • A high level of organizational skills and a love for details.
  • Knowledge of available Mental Health Resources is an asset.
  • Comfortable with tech such as Google Workspace, Airtable, ClickUp or similar project management and database software.
  • High level of self-motivation and willingness to learn.
  • A demonstrated self-starter and strong ability to work independently as well as collaborate with a dynamic, driven and growing team.

Compensation and Details:

  • This position is 32 hours/week
  • Salary range is $54,000 - $58,000
  • Flexible, hybrid work-from-home/office model
  • Extended Health Benefits

Job Type: Full-time
