Job Description
Public Works Clerk Typists are on the front lines as the key point of contact between the public and the City to provide customer service and find creative ways to solve challenges. As a Public Works Clerk Typist, you work with customers to answer inquiries, guide people through processes, help fill out forms and provide information. You are focused on the details with strong organizational and typing skills, take the time to listen so you can deliver what is most helpful for the customer and your team.
Public Works Clerk typists also provide administrative and clerical support for the City of Merritt’s team and other internal customers by keeping records and files, entering, and retrieving data to/from computerized information systems, ensuring all records are accurate and complete. Responsible for ordering and organizing stationery and supplies in the office and ensuring office equipment is in working order.
Responding to and resolving high volumes of internal and external customer service requests and complaints frequently confidential and sensitive in nature.
Qualifications
- At least 2+ years of experience in a customer service role
- Grade 12 plus 1 year in a post secondary program in office administration/business administration or related discipline.
- Valid Driver’s license
- Typing speed of 50 wpm.
- Considerable experience or training in standard computer applications including word processing, excel spreadsheets, and databases.
- Able to provide professional, patient, attentive and courteous service to internal and external customers and team members.
- Handle sensitive, private and confidential information with tact and discretion.
- Work independently and collaborate with the greater team.
- Problem solving skills with a talent for finding creative and resourceful solutions.
- Experience in dealing with diverse communities.
- Time management skills with effective methods to remain organized, prioritize and multi-task.
- Proficient computer and keyboarding skills; working knowledge of MS Excel and Word is preferred.

- Courteous and effective with the public in providing information and assisting with customer service requests.

This position is within the union bargaining unit, and the rate of pay is $29.93 (2024 Cupe rates).
